AP: Man Charged for Having Sex With Teen Wife
Not sure if this has already been posted, but I'll give it a shot.

By KEVIN O'HANLON Associated Press Writer

July 26,2005 | LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 22-year-old man faces criminal charges in Nebraska for having sex with an underage 13-year-old girl, although he legally married her in Kansas after she became pregnant.

The man's lawyer said the couple, with their families' support, "made a responsible decision to try to cope with the problem."

Matthew Koso, 22, was charged Monday with first-degree sexual assault, punishable by up to 50 years in prison. He was released on $7,500 bail pending an Aug. 17 preliminary hearing.

After the girl became pregnant, her mother gave permission in May for Koso to take the young woman to Kansas, which allows minors to get married with parental consent. The girl is now 14 and seven months pregnant.

1. OK, if he boinked her before the teen-marriage-by-consent
it's rape. Let him rot in jail.

i think the title is misleading, sex with the teen-as-wife is not what he is charged with, but rather sex with the teen girl BEFORE she was his wife.

I'm pretty sure I read another thread on this, which had quite a heated debate on the whole rape/consentual sex thing.

On edit: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=1655690

Looks like it got a bit TOO heated :O

7. This issue is really weird all over the country. For example:
When speaking about consensual sex, two teens underage of consent can both be charged and punished and their parents with a certain type of child abuse or not preventing child abuse if the parents knew or had suspicion of the activity!

Then if the teens are close in age and one turns 18 and is then legally an adult and they continue to have sex, if the state wants to prosecute the older teen for statutory rape or in our state WI it would be labeled as sexual assault of a minor, this is punishable by up to a 10,000 fine and a year in prison!

And anyone who has knowledge of the two having a sexual relationship can press charges including friends, family members a teacher, counselor etc.

But if they want to get married at 16-18 and get both sets of parents to consent then they can legally have sex.
Talk about ass backwards!

So the message that sends to the kids is two fold, if you want to have sex with your boyfriend/girlfriend make sure you don't get caught, don't get pregnant and no one knows or suspects your are doing it or hell go ahead and get married first!

Is this the 1950's? I mean I don't condone 12 and 13 year olds having sex but when you get up into the late teens and many kids are 17 dating 18 or 19 year-olds I would think that would be pretty common. Responsible kids go to planned parenthood and get protection and are responsible and the way the law reads that is punishable by 10,000 and a year in jail - that's a reward for being responsible! go figure!
