Iraq Wants Quick Withdrawal of U.S. Troops

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's transitional prime minister called Wednesday for a speedy withdrawal of U.S. troops and the top U.S. commander here said he believed a "fairly substantial" pullout could begin next spring and summer.

Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said at a joint news conference with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld that the time has arrived to plan a coordinated transition from American to Iraqi military control throughout the country.

Asked how soon a U.S. withdrawal should happen, he said no exact timetable had been set. "But we confirm and we desire speed in that regard," he said, speaking through a translator. "And this fast pace has two aspects."

First, there must be a quickening of the pace of U.S. training of Iraqi security forces, and second there must be closely coordinated planning between the U.S.-led military coalition and the emerging Iraq government on a security transition, he said.

27. that will leave the remaining troops even more vulnerable to attack. there
aren't enough of them as it is to control the devolving situation there. They all need to come home, otherwise the remaining ones will be sitting ducks.

as I did in the other thread...

Rummy needs to be asked this question. "Will we close our bases?" Of course that will never, ever happen. Until the bases are closed and dismantled the US will not have "left" Iraq.

26. How many troops will it take to guard each of the fourteen
military installations? How many troops will it take to operate each one? Even if its 4500 for each base. The U.S. will still have to have 63,000 troops in Iraq. So who's bullshitting who?

6. That's a good one.............
we're never going to be able to leave as long as Mr. Steadfast is in office. Maybe a token withdrawal before the '06 elections, but they'll be right back afterwords. The Iraqi "Army" can't tie their boots without American help.

Iraq PM urges 'speedy' US pullout

Iraq's interim Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari has called for US troops to leave the country soon, but added no timetable had been set for withdrawal.

Mr Jaafari was speaking in a joint press conference with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who is in Baghdad on a surprise visit.

Mr Jaafari asked the US to train Iraqi troops faster and to begin handing security control over to local forces.

The top US commander in Iraq has said a withdrawal could begin in the spring.

17. They've made these pronouncements before
It's always for political reasons. Remember what they said in February 2005:

Iraq Sees Coalition Troop Pull-Out by Mid-2006

Here's another:

LONDON -- Major reductions in U.S. troop levels in Iraq next year appear increasingly likely, although Pentagon officials and private analysts said Monday it is too early to predict the specific size and timing.

The Pentagon is eager to pull some of its 135,000 troops out of Iraq in 2006, partly because the counterinsurgency is stretching the Army and Marine Corps perilously thin as casualties mount and partly because officials believe the presence of a large U.S. force is generating tacit support for anti-American violence.

U.S. May Begin Iraq Troop Pullout in '06

Reading emphasis: When the hell did they finally reach that conclusion? :eyes:

Then in April 2005 the US pulled out of major cities in Iraq.

Ah ... but who could forget this gem from a month ago:

WASHINGTON: Critics of the Iraq war proposed a congressional resolution on Thursday calling for a US troop withdrawal in a reflection of growing American unease, but the White House and the Pentagon rejected the idea.

The resolution, backed by North Carolina Republican representative Walter Jones and Hawaii Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie, calls for the Bush administration to develop a plan by the end of this year to pull out all American troops from Iraq and to begin the withdrawal by October 1, 2006.

... Bush spokesman Scott McClellan said setting a withdrawal date would send the wrong message to Iraqi insurgents.

"This message would say to the terrorists: All you have to do is wait until that day when our troops leave and then you can start carrying out those attacks and just hold out." he said.

Won't pull out of Iraq: White House

Do you think ... just maybe ... there's political motivation in this pronouncement? Are there any embarrassing news stories the Bush Administration might want to distract the American people away from?

Iraq Wants Quick Withdrawal of U.S. Troops

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's transitional prime minister called Wednesday for a speedy withdrawal of U.S. troops and the top U.S. commander here said he believed a "fairly substantial" pullout could begin next spring and summer.

Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said at a joint news conference with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld that the time has arrived to plan a coordinated transition from American to Iraqi military control throughout the country.

"We do not want to be surprised by a withdrawal that is not in connection with our Iraqi timing,"' he said.

Iraq Signs Military Pact with Iran
Headlines : International
Thu, 7 Jul 2005

Former foes Iraq and Iran announced “a new chapter” in their relations on Thursday, including cross-border military co-operation, dismissing US concerns about Iranian regional meddling.

On his first official visit to Tehran, Iraqi minister of defence Saadoun al-Dulaimi asserted his country’s sovereign right to seek help from wherever it sees fit in rebuilding its defence capabilities.

“Nobody can dictate to Iraq its relations with other countries,” Mr Dulaimi said in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Admiral Ali Shamkhani.

The two ministers said that a military co-operation agreement, now in the preparation, would include Iranian help with training and upgrading Iraq’s reconstituted armed forces, a process so far overseen by US and coalition advisers.

Why do you think fourteen permanent military bases are being built--to give the soldiers something to do?

And where does the Iraqi government get off saying such things, anyway? What do they think they are, a sovereign nation?
