Speaking to a convention of lay leaders in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman and his Democratic counterpart, Howard Dean, spent an hour making their cases and answering questions.
....
Striking a measured and optimistic tone when speaking first, Mehlman received polite applause after talking about GOP efforts to cut taxes, encourage faith-based groups and boost entrepreneurship. In a speech similar to one he gave last week to the National Black Chamber of Commerce, he smiled frequently and offered the audience an alternative to the Democrats.
....
At times taking a more partisan tack, Dean chided Republicans with familiar criticisms about fiscal discipline, credibility and national defense. He said the Democrats, too, are the party of moral values.
The loudest applause came when Dean insinuated that Republican election officials made it more difficult for blacks to vote in southern Ohio on Election Day 2004, and when he attacked President Bush's rationale for the Iraq war.
"It's not a moral value to send our sons and daughters into Iraq to die," he said.
