Leahy: 'Activist' Nominee Won't Get Vote

WASHINGTON (AP) - Top Judiciary Committee Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont said he will vote against Supreme Court nominee John Roberts if the judge seems likely to pursue an ``activist'' philosophy. Another Democrat said Roberts assured him he is no ideologue.

In an interview broadcast Tuesday on Vermont Public Radio's ``Switchboard'' program, Leahy said he would vote against the appeals court judge if it seemed as if he would pursue an activist agenda on the court. In selecting Roberts, President Bush emphasized that he was looking for someone who would not legislate from the bench.

Leahy said he's worried that Roberts might try to unravel matters that should be settled law.

Denouncing conservatives on the current court, the Vermont senator said in the interview: ``They have struck down parts of the Violence Against Women Act, environmental acts, child safety legislation.''

2. Go, Leahy! He's RIGHT.
From the article: "In selecting Roberts, President Bush emphasized that he was looking for someone who would not legislate from the bench."

****

Bush always SAYS the opposite of the real intentions...haven't they learned anything yet?

4. Roberts is a pre-owned TOOL, through-and-through...
The POS helped draft Da Blivet's SC case for the 2000 election challenge...

And B*SH rewarded him with a JUDGESHIP (On the THIRD try)

This is the best "STEALTH" candidate they can come up with;
He's a lapdoggy for Corporate interests,
but you can't complain about his 'record' because he
DOESN'T FRICKING HAVE ONE!!!!

His NON-Judge Record: Mouthpiece for corporations who want to violate the rights of citizens.
He spent 20 years getting REALLY good at using the LAW
to allow the RICH to F*CK the ordinary.

CUE the goddamn Postcard-campaign:

9. The Dude's been groomed for this from
day one (lawschool?) No paper trail, worked only for repub administrations, then worked for one of those "important" DC lawfirms associating with only the best in the party. When did he marry? I get the feeling his family was bought and paid for to go along with the package they are selling.

5. Nice to hear-
Now, if we could only replace Harry Reid with someone like Leahy, we might be able to actually put up a fight.

7. What do you have against Senator Reid? I think he's doing a damn
good job and puts up a hell of a good fight against the GOP.

Harry Reid's Time Clock;

IA Leak Case By the Numbers

Number of days after the article outing Ambassador Wilson's wife appeared that the White House required its staff to turn over evidence relating to the leak: 85

Approximate hours between then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzalez's advance notification to White House Chief of Staff Andy Card that he would require staff to turn over evidence relating to the case and formal notification to staff of that requirement: 12

Minimum number of times an Administration official leaked classified information about the identity of Ambassador Wilson's wife: 11

Minimum number of times after the beginning of the Justice Department's investigation that White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan claimed Karl Rove was not involved: 5

Number of press conferences since evidence linking Karl Rove to the leak was made public where Press Secretary McClellan has refused to comment on the case, citing an ongoing criminal investigation: 7

Minimum number of hearings held by Senate Republicans to investigate accusations against President Clinton involving the "Whitewater" case: 20

Total hearings held by Senate Republicans to investigate the leak of the covert identity of Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife: 0

8. Reid is all talk and NO action
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 05:01 PM by depakid
and I have a distaste for people like that.

Reid will get up and make a bunch of provocative statements that he has no intention of backing up- (like for instance saying he's shut down the Senate over three of the most extreme and unqualified people to ever be nominated to the federal bench).

Basically, the man's not a leader- he's given the far right EVERY SINGLE THING that they've wanted since he took over- with nary a fight- and even crossed party lines to vote with the Republicans on the bankruptcy bill.

His silly little "clock" is just another cute example of his impudent AND impotent style. The way I see it- he needs to either put up or shut up- because up to this point, his performance has been an embarassment to the party (and quite frankly- to himself).

Contrast that with Bob Dole's performance in 93-95. Dole did a whole lot more with a whole lot less. As I recall, the senate then was one vote short of a filibuster proof majority... for the Dems....

12. I'll second that! Reid is a politician, not a LEADER. And a POOR one.
Considering the FREE POINTS the Goppers have been tossing up lately,
a REAL leader would be demanding HEADLINES
and tearing them to shreds
like a kitten with a new roll of TP.

Even an AVERAGE "Politician" would be making some hay with
current events....

But Reid continues to wander about his own little world,
mumbling to himself...

Reid is a JOKE. A sad JOKE.

WE represent the MAJORITY; we deserve much better!

16. I totally agree. Reid has been doing a tremendous job.
He's kept the Dem votes together more than any other time. He's stressed the importance of staying on message. He's making sure (along with Pelosi) that the message gets framed. He's fighting and uses fighting words. Certainly an improvement over Daschle and I liked him. Give him a chance. It's only been 6 months. Bolton didn't get in. The nuclear option didn't go off (yet at least). Considering what he took over and what he's up against, I don't know who could do better that people wouldn't criticize within a month.

13. what did Roberts do
to get Shumer to shill for him?
Chuck's never been the best Senator to bear the title, but this is a little much. He should be taking pointers from Leahy.
