Questionable grant program may face ax

Local Congresswoman wonders at allocations.

WASHINGTON — A federal homeland security grant program that sparked widespread confusion over how it allocated $12.9 million for potential terrorist targets in California "may not have a long life," according to a leading Los Angeles-area lawmaker.

Rep. Jane Harman, D-El Segundo, top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said she spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff after a report on what she described as a "fairly random' list of 73 Los Angeles County sites getting a portion of the special funds.

The list included high-profile sites like Walt Disney Concert Hall, Universal Studios and a number of chemical plants and refineries, along with a shopping mall in Puente Hills and the Glendale Galleria.

No hospitals or universities made the list, nor did Los Angeles International Airport, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
