Washington, Jul. 28 (UPI) — China has embarked on an image-polishing campaign to counter U.S. criticism of its growing economic and military power.

Taking advantage of the visit of a senior official to Washington, China is making its case in public for a strategic relationship and is hiring a U.S. lobbying firm to communicate with Congress, the Financial Times said Thursday.

Tang Jiaxuan, state councilor, assured the U.S.-China Business Council, "All this will mean boundless opportunities for U.S. businesses."

China, he said, would "gradually" address U.S. concerns over the trade deficit and intellectual property rights and allow it greater access to services.

Tang reiterated Chinese demands that the United States give China full market economy status, lift restrictions on commodity and technology exports "and correct the wrong practices of trade protectionism."

Tang, a key figure in Chinese efforts to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions, also met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

1. the chinese government can go pound sand up their ass.

regardless of the lipstick they put on their swine-like government, they are nonetheless a totalitarian crypto-fascist regime that oppresses their own population.

the chinese government is hell-bent on hegemony in East Asia and will do whatever it takes to weaken the West in this pursuit. their trade policies are nothng less than open warfare by another name.

their markets are not open to thier trading partners and they never will be. anyone who believes what the chinese government says is not paying attention to the details of the trade policies under which they funcion.

what is worse is that Bush's antagonism towards North Korea allowed China to play arbiter in this situation, thus granting China even more status as a politicial power and now the US is beholden to China for these efforts and thus reduces US leverage with China in other areas of concern to the US.

the chinese are playing a game that spans a century, while the US is playing one that focuses towards the next election or business quarter.

they are going to clean our clocks, and it is our own fault if we allow it to happen.

if the chinese government is so hunky-dory, how come the US had to pay $25,000,000 just to get our air force plane back in the spring of 2001?

2. Totalitarian regime for sure...

...but foreigners investing there are more than happy that way. If you get the democracy going in there (not that I oppose it, the Chinese people diserve it as much as anyone else) you get minimum wages soon after, therefore destroying the cheap labor business (ie: Wal-Mart et al).

So I had a laugh when I saw Rice commenting on China's "problems of civil rights".

Very nice post. This is absolutely true. I've been saying for about 2 years, "The Chinese are not our friends. They are our antagonist".

But no one is listening. They're too busy buying crap at the Crate & Barrel.
