U.S. House approves $14.5 bln energy bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday easily approved an energy bill packed with $14.5 billion in tax breaks and incentives and hailed by Republicans as a major change in U.S. energy policy.

Environmental and consumer groups criticized the legislation as a giveaway to an industry enjoying record profits with crude oil prices near $60 a barrel, while spending little on ways to curb demand or encourage renewable energy.

The bill passed by a vote of 275 to 156.

The Senate is expected to approve it on Friday, just before Congress recesses for its summer vacation. President Bush is expected next week to sign the energy bill, which he called one of his top priorities in 2005.

30. No, I'm really not.
I'm starting to finally believe that Nader was right. Until the Americans who insist on ignoring reality - in favor of living in bush's version of realtiy - are *themselves* suffering as a result of harmful republican policies, that there will be little/no change.

2. More money for big oil and power companies as promised!
should we just go ahead and make our tax payment checks out directly to Halliburton now?

that way, the government doesn't have to be the middle-man..

26. 75 Democrats Voted "Aye"
My apologies, it was worse than I thought. These results are old, from 21-Apr-2005. I am still trying to uncover the latest roll call revealing how the members of the House voted yesterday, July 28, 2005:

Two hundred House Republicans voted for the energy measure, as did 75 Democrats. Opposing the bill were 31 Republicans, 124 Democrats and an independent.--New York Times

6. Did the WP get the vote wrong...
... because last night, as the vote was being held, I distinctly recall posts saying that it was tied 210-210 and the `pugs kept the vote open until they could twist enough arms. When I gave up following it, the vote was something like 217-215. So what happened?

11. I read last night that...
... energy companies spent $367 million on lobbyists and campaign contributions promoting this bill (which they and Cheney's boys wrote).

That's an average of $686,000 per legislator.... And, if one adds in the $1.5 billion in pork that DeLay threw in at the last minute, there's about $13 billion in tax credits, subsidies and tax breaks. That's a return on investment of, wait for it... 3500%.

Why isn't the whole country up in arms about this?

Beats me. I'm livid. :grr:

12. This Is Not An Energy Bill
this is a Power Grab enabled by a Neocon-dominated government.

Why aren't the streets of DC filled with protesters? Must I accept what I'm told, that our young, instead of burning with a zeal to try to change the world for the better, care only about money?

My friend says corporate crooks like Bernard Ebbers, Ken Lay and Dennis Kozlowski are worse than serial killers because they leave far more people devastated in their wake.

We need to have the same fix on white collar crime that we have on murder....--Stacy Horn, NYT 7/16/05.

This energy bill is as much a white collar crime as was the fraud and theft perpetrated upon WorldCom, Enron, and Tyco, because it will be ... felt worldwide, sending ripples throughout the economy in the form of decreased investment and product development ... send(ing) innocent hard-working people ... into poverty or financial distress.

Where is the public outcry?

20. So where do we go from here?
How much electricity can we do without if we really try? How many of us can invest in solar for modest electrical needs like our computers?

When my late husband and I went into the woods, we found solar could do lights and a few hours of television. Of course we had to switch from AC to DC and those appliances were often very expensive.

I think it's worth a try again. Time to starve the beast again. Walk and bicycle or roller skate when you can instead of driving. I think we need to start an anti-energy movement as long as these beasts are in power. I would love to see them with all their barrels of oil stacking up boohooing because no one is buying.

Will Grandma freeze her tookus off this winter because she can't pay the oil bill? Y-e-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s. The one thing they could do that would make a difference - mandate car makers to increase mileage by a considerable amount - is not mentioned. Let's here it for giant, gas guzzling SUVs.

29. true, need to reduce consumption
The market drives the production of the gas guzzlers -- the manufacturers are producing what people buy. We consumers are really to blame. Too many people complain about payin $50 to fill up the SUV. This creates the perfect conditions (excuse) for congress to subsidize/bribe the oil industry, all in the guise of helping the consumer.
