India rain death toll reaches 850
Arrests made over rumors that led to deadly stampede
Saturday, July 30, 2005

MUMBAI, India (CNN) -- About 850 people have died from record-setting rains that caused extensive flooding in Mumbai and triggered landslides in the region, authorities said Saturday.

Nearly half of those confirmed dead in Maharashtra state in western India died in the city of Mumbai -- formerly called Bombay.

The city is used to heavy rain during the monsoon season, but Mumbai was deluged with 37 inches (940 millimeters) of rain in 24 hours -- the most any Indian city ever has received in a day....

Late Thursday, 22 people, including several children, were killed in a stampede prompted by rumors of a collapsed dam from the flooding, according to officials and Indian media reports.

Ten people were arrested on suspicion of rumor-mongering in that incident. Among other rumors were that a tsunami was coming to the coastal city and that a super cyclone was on the way....

living in the desert its hard to imagine all that rain. We get an inch and its flash flooding bigtime.

Leave it to someone to start the rumor of even worse stuff on the way.

with global warming/climate chnges its too bad we can't move the rain & lack of rain, etc to places that need it.....

2. Shah Rukh Khan lives in Mumbai...
I'm sure he's alright, as he's wealthy and probably has a better house in a better area than all of these poor people.

I hope. :scared:

What sad news. I don't know what else to add. Those people don't have much to start with, and now they have to rebuild after this.

4. Bombay got a METER of rain the other day!!!

I read that may be a world record. And Bombay is low-lying so such rain is very bad there.

5. 37 inches in 24 hours.....
I'm measuring that distance from the floor. That's an unbelievable amount of rain.

This must be some kind of record. Wow. Well, I know they want their water. But that's ridiculous.

6. They can send some of their rain this way.
Here in Missouri we haven't seen such a drought since the dust bowl days of the 1930's.
