Cuban regime and dissidents agree in rejecting new US official
Cuban regime and dissidents agree in rejecting new US official

Sat Jul 30, 9:26 PM ET

HAVANA, (AFP) - Tensions have escalated between Cuba's government and dissidents, but both sides bitterly rejected Washington's appointment this week of a "transition coordinator" to speed President Fidel Castro's downfall.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Thursday named Caleb McCarry the US "Cuba transition coordinator" to "accelerate the demise of Castro's tyranny" on the Caribbean island the Communist guerrilla leader has run since 1959.

"Surely he will receive a juicy salary in his new job, but Caleb McCarry -- I assure you -- will retire without setting foot in Cuba," Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said in Panama.

Cuban opposition leaders were at least as forceful in their reaction.

"Any transition in Cuba is for Cubans to define, lead, organize and coordinate," said Oswaldo Paya, leader of the Christian Liberation Movement and promoter of a petition seeking democracy in Cuba.

3. I can hardly believe what I'm reading.
What kind of diplomatic language is this? What amazes me most about
Rice and Bush is that they've learned nothing at all from their last
attempt to accelerate the demise of another country's leader.

This is arrogance beyond belief.

He certainly is well supported in Venezuela, isn't he?

12. Cuba is highly respected through the region -- they send Doctors
to many of the countries in the region. None to the British and US colonies -- so any non-resident who is working in one of the US/UK colonies returns to their home country for competent, inexpensive medical care.

After the last round of hurricanes and the joke $50,000 given to each island by the US -- compared to the aid sent by Cuba -- the US administration is nothing but a big joke down there.

And when they speak of bush it is usually with lots of bad words in front of his name.

5. Roque is right - any country that lets the bushgang set foot on it

is in for trouble.

6. This is meaningless, just domestic US politics

There's an incumbant Dem Senator in Florida that they want defeated. This is all about keeping the Maimi cubanos in the republican pocket.

7. I hope you're right. Sounds goddawful so far!
I hope Nelson has a better hold on that seat than they think.

The maintainance of that nasty crowd of right-wing reactionary "exiles" in Florida is getting to be an old, irritating, and expensive habit. Indulging them has made a mockery of U.S. policy, if such a thing is still possible.

11. you're right about this, Judi

The maintainance of that nasty crowd of right-wing reactionary "exiles" in Florida is getting to be an old, irritating, and expensive habit.

Allowing a handful of 'exiles' to dictate our foriegn policy towards Cuba does this country's image abroad incalculable damage, and hinders trade that would benefit the people of BOTH countries.

8. Regime change?
Didn't Boy George once say something about not promoting regime changes? Or was that just in Iraq? :eyes:

10. Showdown looming over farm trade with Cuba

Showdown looming over farm trade with Cuba

SAM HANANEL
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - A showdown is looming between the White House and Midwestern lawmakers who say new Bush administration rules are hurting the burgeoning farm trade with Cuba.

The dispute is over a rule issued by the Treasury Department in February that requires Cuba to pay in advance for food shipments from American exporters before they are shipped from U.S. ports.
(snip)

But the White House has threatened to veto the entire bill over Emerson's language, saying the stiffer rules are part of the sanctions to punish Fidel Castro's regime in Cuba. Still, the House kept the provision when it passed the bill last month and a measure with similar language is now working its way through the Senate.

"It's the most convoluted, ridiculous scheme that totally backfires on the people who support the administration most - farmers in rural America," said Emerson, a Republican.

14. No one wants their country end up like Iraq
except for the most rabid Miami Cubans, no one wants to see the US destroy Cuba like it has Iraq.

When did GAWD appoint the US the guardian of Latin America? Condi Rice must think she is running the old British Colonial Office.
