Debate over what to call Iraq war delays Shelby Township memorial
8/2/2005, 1:35 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — No one disputes the facts of Mark Barbret's death.
....

But a dispute over what to call the war in which he died has delayed the opening of a memorial to Barbret in his hometown of Shelby Township, north of Detroit.

The federal government has given several names to the Iraq war — the War on Terror, the Global War on Terrorism, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The first two also cover the war in Afghanistan, which in turn also is designated Operation Enduring Freedom.

Anti-war activists say they do not like the names, calling them pro-war propaganda.

....

"I don't think the war in Iraq should be called the war on terrorism — Saddam Hussein did not have any part to play in causing the September 11 terrorist attack," Bergier said.

1. How can this still be a question? The War on Iraq is NOT the War on Terror
Jesus H. Christ. How sad these people don't even know why this guy died.

2. History will give it a name
They just might not want it on a memorial.

3. That's why The Wall is so appropriate.
It honors the dead ... NOT war. Jingoistic WAR memorials make me nauseous.

Why can't they just engrave the names of the dead, the country, and the date? Why must they advertise war like it's on a theater marquee?

4. sad but true, who can keep up with all the names any more...
another sad fact is it's hard to keep up with the death toll..I read an article where some of the soldiers aren't getting the full military burial. since they don't have their dd-214 at the time of the funeral..

6. I live next to this township.........
and let me tell you something - this is a mostly rightwing community. I never saw so many Bush/Cheney signs before the election. Lots of those yellow magnets too. Now when I drive by the houses that sported the signs I think about how the rest of us have had to suffer because of their stupidity.

9. They should go with "Operation Iraqi Freedom", as that's the official name
Shelby Township is a very conservative community, that also has a lot of people who are serving in the military at this time. I don't see why they shouldn't just use the title that the administration gave the mission.

I can't imagine that there are all that many peace activists in Shelby Township to object to whatever they end up putting on the memorial. Or are the peace activists from outside Shelby Township? If so, it's not really their business, is it?

This is not a good issue to get worked up over. Dead soldiers and their friends and families are not appropriate targets for political correctness, and quibbling over words on a memorial does not help our side at all.

11. How 'bout the "Kick Their Ass and Take Their Gas" memorial?
Sorry, but that's what this "war" is all about. You may not like it, but putting "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in stone doesn't turn a lie into the truth.
