GOP lawmakers to tout successes

The Washington Times

WASHINGTON -- Republicans in Congress were told to spend the August recess talking about recent accomplishments, such as the passage of a jobs-creating highway bill and an energy bill but, unlike previous breaks, there was not a coordinated push on Social Security reform.

"This could arguably be the most productive week ... since Contract with America," said Rep. Zach Wamp, Tennessee Republican.

He said House Republicans have a chance to rally attention before the Senate begins confirmation hearings this fall on Judge John G. Roberts Jr., who has been nominated to the Supreme Court.

Social Security "is on the discussion list for recess, but we have a myriad of accomplishments we need to address first," said Ron Bonjean, spokesman for House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, Illinois Republican.

1. Should take about 2 seconds to "tout successes"
I hope it takes longer for them to wrangle out of guilt-by-association with DeLay.

3. I want to re-read this contract that I supposedly agreed to.
I don't think there's anything in it that calls for laying off thousands of decently paid employees and either outsourcing their jobs to another country or replacing them with people paid half as much.

5. RE: Successes?
Can we then tout how the criminal investigation is going over how classified information is leaking out of the Administration?

9. What do any of these 'successes' have to do with
Americans' priorities? With the exception of the highway bill (loaded with pork), how do they affect gas costs, health insurance costs, the Iraq war, and our educational system?

The help the rich and corporate America, period. Nada for the rest of us.
