Via telephone, Rumsfeld reaffirms war on terror
http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8BNUDQG1.html

Mechanical problems with his plane forced Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to miss a luncheon with Dallas business leaders on Tuesday, but it didn't stop him from phoning in his support of the war on terrorism, which he called a "struggle between civilization and extremists."

Rumsfeld missed his scheduled speech to the Greater Dallas Chamber when his plane had mechanical problems at Taos, N.M. While waiting for his plane to refuel at an Amarillo airport, he spoke via telephone about the war on terror. His remarks were broadcast on the hotel conference room's public address system.

"It's been nearly four years since terrorists launched attacks on our country and murdered thousands of innocent people," he said of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. "It's a fact that the enemies of civilized society today remain deadly."

Rumsfeld said the war on terror is not a war pitting the United States against the Muslim faith. Rather, he said the struggle is between Muslim extremists and more moderate members of the faith.

2. Agreed.
a "struggle between civilization and extremists."

True. Only which side represents civilization, and which side the extremists. And how many sides are there?

4. Well, extremists are exteme, and go to extremes, so have at least 2 sides.
And civilizations are diverse, so tend to have many sides.

So, obviously, there are a great many sides. It must be a struggle to remember them all -- or is it a war to remember them all?

3. Wait a minute: is it a war or a struggle?
Does it matter if one speaks in person or via phone? Maybe it's only a struggle on the phone but a war in person -- or is it the other way around?

Oh, I'm so confused -- maybe I should leave this and go see 'Struggle of the Worlds.'
