Former HealthSouth exec gets probation in Saudi bribery scheme

A federal judge sentenced a former HealthSouth Corp. executive to probation and a $500 fine Wednesday for lying about a scheme to pay a $1 million bribe in return for a $50 million deal to run a hospital linked to Saudi Arabia's royal family.

Thomas Carman agreed to plead guilty to making a false statement to the FBI about the bribe, which was uncovered during an investigation into the huge fraud that nearly bankrupted the rehabilitation and medical services chain.

The defense requested probation, and prosecutors also sought leniency in return for Carman's cooperation in the investigation of HealthSouth. In response, U.S. District Judge L. Scott Coogler ordered him to spend three years on supervised release.

Carman and another executive, former vice president Vincent Nico of Palm Harbor, Fla., pleaded guilty in the scheme last year. Nico previously was given probation.
