Roberts makes a correction ( Admits He Registered as Lobbyist)
WASHINGTON -- John G. Roberts yesterday conceded he should have said he was registered to lobby on behalf of the cosmetics industry in the completed questionnaire he submitted Tuesday to the Senate for his Supreme Court confirmation hearings.

In an amendment filed yesterday in response to a Newsday story about the omission, Roberts confirmed he was registered to lobby for the Cosmetics, Toiletry and Fragrance Association and had met with two agencies on its behalf in 2001.
.....
Some in the Senate expressed surprise at Roberts' failure to include a publicly available lobbying disclosure form.

In his letter amending his answers yesterday, Roberts said the cosmetics association retained Hogan & Hartson in 2001 to oppose a proposed FDA sunscreen labeling regulation.

"I was asked to prepare a legal analysis of how the proposed regulation would violate the First Amendment," he wrote. "In meetings with the general counsels of the Office of Management and Budget and the Food and Drug Administration, the latter attended by other FDA employees, I made clear my client's position that implementing the regulation would result in litigation."

29. It's not the Federalist Society membership or the lobbying
that makes me question Roberts' suitability for the Supreme Court. It's his memory. Should we be considering a Justice like that who seems to have a bad case of pre-senile dementia? :sarcasm:

3. Come on, now! Filling out those complicated question sheets
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 08:17 AM by Dhalgren
is hard work! He can't be expected to remember every little thing he was paid money for over the last five years! I mean be reasonable! He had to remember all this stuff while at the same time fill out that hard question sheet (which is really hard work!)! Besides 2001 was back in his "youthful indiscretion" days - so it shouldn't count, anyway - not if you're going to be fair. Democrats are so mean!

26. Yeah, really!
He had to remember all this stuff while at the same time fill out that hard question sheet.

He probably had to ask for a phone book to look up the addresses and phone numbers of all his references and previous employers! That just adds to the clutter and confusion of filling out an application! Everyone knows that!!!

17. He seems to conveniently "forget" a lot of things, doesn't he?
"Consequently, the question about lobbying on the questionnaire did not trigger a memory of these meetings."

Newsday first reported Wednesday that Roberts had done the lobbyist work, resulting in the suspension of stricter labeling rules for sunscreen

So he doesn't care if people get skin cancer as long as the big guys get their money.

20. Cosmetic industry = chemical industry

Many chemicals in this country are banned elsewhere (at least eleven
found in fragrances). They are dangerous synthetic substances that are
known to cause serious illnesses.

A few years ago I emailed the EPA because fragrance wasn't listed as
an asthma trigger. The response was basically that it was unfounded.
Yah right!

It'll come in handy when he "forgets" all the promises he will make at his confirmation hearnings to be impartial, non-partisan, uphold the law, and refrain from bringing his personal beliefs into the decision making process!

And the Dems are truly rubes if they fall for all this crap (I've come to expect as much from repukes).

The cosmetics industry has left a trail of blinded rabbits in it's path.

What's interesting about this is that cosmetics are, by definition, things that cover up reality. He da man.

31. Roberts Failed to Disclose Lobbyist Work
August 4, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Supreme Court nominee John Roberts has acknowledged he should have disclosed to a Senate committee that he worked as lobbyist for the cosmetics industry in 2001.

In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee late Wednesday, Roberts wrote that he neglected to reveal that work in response to the panel's questionnaire asking about his lobbying activities. Confirmation hearings begin Sept. 6.

The work, which was on behalf of the Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrances Association, involved an effort to stave off a regulatory change involving sunscreen.

Roberts, a lawyer in private practice at the time, suggested that he did not think of disclosing the information because the nature of the work -- in which he met with lawyers at the federal Office of Management and Budget and the Food and Drug Administration -- did not seem political.

Darn, this fellow has some serious memory problems for someone so young. I wonder what other lobbying activities he's forgotten about? Like that $80,000 he spent helping Bush get reselected in 2004?
