White House Watch: Bracing for new Rove attacks

White House officials and senior Republican strategists are bracing for a new round of attacks on Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove's involvement in the CIA leak probe, as Democrats move to take advantage of the slow news cycle in August. But insiders say they don't expect to hear anything new in the charges.

"There is no new news," says one senior White House adviser and Rove ally. "Rove is cool as a cucumber."

The Democrats, nonetheless, are looking at the case involving the leak of the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame as a way to paint the White House as stonewalling a legitimate investigation. Coupled with the Bush administration's decision not to provide all documents related to Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts, some Democrats believe they can make the case that the White House isn't being honest with the public. Part of the strategy was unveiled this week when the Democratic National Committee released a fact sheet titled "Mr. Bush, Tear Down That Stone Wall." The opening paragraph said the theme will be built on every day.

"A daily service of the DNC, 'Mr. Bush, Tear Down That Stone Wall!' will highlight a specific fact that has been revealed and what Americans deserve to know about the White House's involvement in the improper and possibly illegal disclosure of an undercover CIA agent's identity for political gain." A DNC official said that "our main point has been that this is about more than just Rove; there was an internal working group focused on discrediting Joe Wilson," Plame's husband, who before her CIA connection was leaked had publicly criticized the Bush administration for its handling of intelligence on Iraq's weapons-making capability.

18. Rove a cucumber?
But I thought that it was Dubya who was the vegetable!

OK, so I know that a cucumber is a fruit, but I wasn't going to get into that.

5. Rove "attacks"???
Seems to me he's taking some well-deserved lumps. In fact, the whole WH establishment is culpable for NOT revealing the leaker.
And if Rove gets his share of the flack, well, boo-hoo.
:nopity:

7. Does this article indicate that this would be a non-issue except for Dems
keeping it alive? I wish there were something here confirming that this is a national security issue, that should be of concern to all -- not just Democrats trying to make political points.

10. The article seems to be down playing the importance of it. Making
it out to be more partisan politics. It's almost reads like Rove wrote the damned thing.

Why is the DSM not in the news? Why is it not mentioned in any of the articles about PlameGate?

Did you check out this story linked on the page?

White House Watch: Feeding the blogs to promote the judge

Senate Democrats and Judiciary Committee minority staffers are miffed that conservative bloggers appear to have more information about Bush Supreme Court nominee John Roberts than they do.

"They've got material out there that we don't know about," complained Sen. Edward Kennedy, who's leading an effort to force the White House to turn over any documents it has on Roberts.

Other Democrats said that they believe the White House is providing supportive bloggers with information that paints Roberts only in a positive light....

Makes me very suspicious of some of the recent articles coming out about Robert's past, like the one that had something to do with Gay Rights. The WH is letting out only what it wants to let out.

14. Why shouldn't he be cool?
He has the entire corrupt Repug machine at his disposal. That includes a particular chimp-man who can grant him a full and unconditional pardon any time he wants. I would be pretty cool in that situation no matter what I had done to my country.

16. WH is frantically trying to figure out when Fitzgerald will be finished.
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 12:18 PM by skip fox
This is my speculation, but it doesn't take much of a leap to arrive at it. Trying to maneuver in the environment post-report/investigation, every bit of intelligence which would help in terms of timing and news cycles would be of profound interest.

They would be talking to everyone they could (maybe to some who are ancillary to the investigation) and watching every sign to discern Fitzgerald's intent.

Will they do something that signals their belief that the investigation is nearing closure??

Might we figure it out? Might such an awareness be important to us.

Is something coming even now?
