Analyst, lobbyists charged in Pentagon probe

Thu Aug 4, 2005 02:16 PM ET

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Reuters) - A Defense Department analyst was charged on Thursday with illegally disclosing classified defense information to two former officials of a pro-Israel lobbying group, court documents showed.

A superseding indictment returned by a federal grand jury and unsealed on Thursday charges Lawrence Franklin, a Pentagon analyst, with giving the information to two former employees of the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

The new indictment charges Steven Rosen, formerly AIPAC's policy director, with illegally receiving classified information from Franklin and with illegally helping Franklin pass on written classified information.

The indictment also charges Keith Weissman, AIPAC's former senior Middle East analyst, with illegally receiving classified information.

2. Here is another story on the same subject
<snip>
Paul McNulty, the U.S. attorney in Alexandria, said the men apparently were motivated by a desire to advance their personal agendas and careers by trading on prized information. "The facts alleged today tell a story of individuals who put their own interests and their own views of foreign policy ahead of American national security," McNulty said at a news conference.

Although the indictment refers to other U.S. officials who gave Rosen classified materials, McNulty said no other charges are planned, but noted the investigation continues.

Could be interesting that charges are being handed down and the investigations still continue. That means they are hoping that someone opens their big mouth on the witness stand.

Two More Charged in Pentagon Leak

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, August 4, 2005; 4:33 PM

Two former employees of an influential pro-Israel lobbying group were charged today with illegally receiving classified information from a Defense Department analyst, according to court documents unsealed in Alexandria.

In a superseding indictment, a federal grand jury also restructured the charges against the analyst, Lawrence A. Franklin, who is alleged to have disclosed classified defense information to the two employees of the group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC.

The new indictment, handed up today and announced by U.S. Attorney Paul McNulty, charges AIPAC's former policy director, Steven Rosen, with illegally receiving classified information from Franklin and with illegally helping Franklin pass on that information.

Another former AIPAC employee, Keith Weissman, is charged with illegally receiving classified information. Weissman formerly worked for AIPAC as a senior Middle East analyst specializing on Iran.

Today's indictment outlines a much broader case against Rosen and Weissman than has previously been indicated, alleging that the two disclosed sensitive information as far back as 1999 and that the topics ranged from Saudi Arabia to al Qaeda to Iran. Recipients of the information included foreign governments and reporters, the 26-page indictment says.

23. So it's as broad as I thought but, doesn't rise to espionage act stuff
Well that's fine. If this is what they can prove and what the evidence supports, then so be it.

Basically saying they didn't steal anything, they just accepted fenced goods and passed them on without it rising to the level of hostility, i.e. treason, sedition, espionage, etc.

Which is not good for them or US-Israeli relations, just the same.
