Basra police tied to journalist's death
http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/nation/12315665.htm

<snip>

Still, Vincent persisted, on a personal mission to uncover the dark political underbelly of Basra. He wrote about it, and it may have cost him his life.

The 49-year-old former arts writer was abducted from a downtown street Tuesday night along with Nour al-Khal, an Iraqi woman who was his longtime assistant and translator. Vincent's body was discovered before dawn, hands bound and shot five times; al-Khal is recovering from multiple gunshots.

<snip>

Multiple witnesses attest that Vincent and Khal were taken by men who appeared to be driving police vehicles.

One witness, who refused to give his name, said he recognized one abductor as a Ministry of Interior employee.

"The man also recognized me, after I saluted him," the witness said. "He said to me, 'Do not interfere! It is our duty.' "

5. when in doubt, go back to what you do best
Police death squads? Sure, they save a lot of time.
Heck, if the brits can make a mistake at home and get away with it, no one will even notice ours in iraqistan.

Write an article about corruption in the local police, then go walking the streets of that same city, what do you expect?

If *I* wrote a LTTE calling our local fuzzies "crooks", should I be surprised when I find I can't even get across town without getting pulled over 20 times and forced to lick the sidewalk? Hell, one of them might even shoot me and claim that I "tried to run over him" with my truck, the usual excuse for a police-action shooting around here....

There's no BushCo involement in this, the locals did it all themselves.

Sorry he had to die in order to prove he was right....

10. And this witness...
One witness, who refused to give his name, said he recognized one abductor as a Ministry of Interior employee.

"The man also recognized me, after I saluted him," the witness said. "He said to me, 'Do not interfere! It is our duty.' "

Either he's not very bright or the "insurgents" are adopting the pentagon creative writing style.

13. UK turned political control of Basra over to Iraq immediately.
According to George Friedman's book "America's Secret War" the US was extremely angry with the British for doing that.
