If you can do it cold turkey more power to you. I could not and I found that a plan really helped me. Don't be afraid to use the patch, gum, lozenges. Whatever can get you through. If Jennings inspires you to do this I know it would have pleased him.

136. Exercise...
I've been smoke-free for twenty years, and when I quit, I started getting up and getting out of the house; smoking while watching TV was a favorite hobby. I'd take a brisk walk -- so fast that I'd find myself concentrating on things like my heart rate (am I dying?) and the slight pain in my legs (hey! where did those muscles come from?) than on having a smoke. It worked for me.

164. For those who want to quit and want some natural help
Here's an herbal blend that I recommend HIGHLY: "Independence" it's called from these people:

http://viable-herbal.com/blends.htm

I quit smoking on Dec 10 with the help of this formula, and suffered nicotine cravings only about 6 times ever, period (and they've got a solution in the package for those!!) and for quite short duration. They have a money back guarantee, so for those who want to try it, it's basically risk free: http://viable-herbal.com/guaran.htm

I'm not sure I could've done it without this program. The one thing I'd caution is to be absolutely sure you WANT to quit -- not just dabbling, 'cause no program in the world will work for that (well, except imprisonment, I suppose -- or hospitalization, or death).

It's not as hard as you think it will be.

The first three days suck, and then you forget for long periods of time.

It's been 20 years since I quit, and the nicest thing about it is that I never have to dread quitting again!

Today was my planned quit-smoking day before I even saw this news...Crazy coincidence.

Mr. Jennings will be missed. Although he wasn't always the perfect newscaster, I have great respect for his long and distinguished career. It would be a nearly impossible blessing for even one more journalist of his caliber to show up on the national scene. My sincerest condolences to his family....

166. Really deep breathing helps too --
flooding those lungs with oxygen. Every now and then I STILL instinctively "reach" for a cigarette -- when I'm frustrated or something. And a nice, deep breath helps that pass. It also helped me in times past when I quit without the help of the herbal blend I mentioned upthread.

85. F.Y.I. Every news org has an obit ready for celebrities in advance
For all celebrities - - entertainers, politicians, artists, sports figures, every kind of celebrity. They have them updated regularly, so they'll be ready to go if the person passes away unexpectedly. That said, Jennings announced when he retired that he had been diagnosed with cancer, so yes, his passing was expected.

RIP Mr. Jennings.

183. I didn't mean to imply that the obits were canned
I just meant that in-depth obits of a famous person issued shortly after they pass away does not necessarily mean that the news orgs had advanced noticed that person was going to pass soon.

188. Oh, but obits are canned
they've got them HFR'd and on the shelf just in case. (HFR=hold for release)

If a personality has announced an illness, then they produce an obit and update it as time goes by... when that person passes, they've got the story ready to air.

I am truly sorry to see Peter Jennings go, and I'm disgusted with the way The Washington Post politicized his obituary (Patricia Sullivan just HAD to mention that the conservative think tanks criticized him as liberal :eyes:).

Jennings made his mistakes, took his lumps, and learned his craft, and in the end he did bring so much to the world. May he rest in peace, may his legacy be kept alive, and may we all learn from what he achieved.

Don't you remember when they accidentally leaked a few of them awhile back? They had Reagan, Cheney, Castro, the Pope... it's something they do when any prominent figure is getting old/sick, so they're prepared with the information as quickly as possible.

I tried to quit today - so perhaps this will put me over the top tomorrow. Just a stark reminder.

And it was great that he was so honest about it. That does help others I think. Every single quitter or continued quitter counts.

Two years is really impressive. Looks like we got a true quit on our hands. Way to go Bluebear.

The website was a lifesaver. I've got over 13 months now, although I'm still chewing nicotine gum. But I was a 2 pack a day for 36 years, so I guess I'm lucky to be still breathing. I hope to be off the gum by the end of the year.

Odd, that my 1000th post wasn't about politics :)

197. Try Quitnet. Part of your quit will be helping those people who are
behind you in their withdrawl. That reinforces how smoking is really just a dirty habit & you help people. Plus - when you crave, you get online and post Help. and many people stop their chats and come to your aid with encouragement. And then the crave is over in a few minutes and your hands have been kept busy typing away and thanking others.

It really is a great site!

148. Rest in Peace Peter Jennings
I quit smoking cold turkey in 1982 and it was remarkably easy. I just switched back to swimming and running, but alas I started back in 1996 and haven't even attempted to quit since. It's a disgusting habit for sure, but since our youngest sibbling died of cancer earlier this year and she never smoked, I doubt that Jennings death is enough to inspire me to stop.
My beloved didn't quit in '82 and his smoking never bothered me and although I suggested that he should quit given his genetic predisposition to heart problems, he continued until he had a heart attack two years ago. Of course he quit instantly. His illness scared me, but since longevity and good health abounds in my family, I saw no reason to quit.
Maybe I need to focus on the complete waste of money spent on this stupid habit.

On a serious note: I did quit smoking over 20 years ago. I had a hell of a time (3 pack a day man) tried twice. The second time I used a devise made by Water Pic, a system of filters that reduces the amount of smoke you get from each cig. Don't know if they still make them but it may be worth a try if cold turkey is too tough.

184. I thought PJ was one of the few good ones to challenge politicians
to be better and do better...His nightly report was the ONLY one I would listen to..and I enjoyed very much his niggling at what was purpurtrated to be "truth" coming out of Washington...He always encouraged us to read between the lines and seek the truth for ourselves..He will be missed...My thoughts are with his family..

All gone within the past year or so.

So sad that the network news has changed so much, and so quickly. And seemingly not for the better.

75. my comment from GDpolitics thread b/c I admired him for this
Jennings didn't go so overboard after 9-11 like many.....the Saturday
after 9-11 he hosted a 2 hour show with children in NYC asking questions (most were with their parents)

one young teen-ager asked what was he to think when the Muslims and the Christians both claimed to believe in God

there was a black minister in the audience who gave a priceless answer 'anyone speaking in hate is not with God'.....clearly this applied to the Falwell types blaming 9-11 on gays and feminists, although this was something only older children and adults would probably notice

Jennings moderated this discussion very well, giving careful attention to the concerns of children......the whole calm atmosphere of the discussion was a welcome relief from the 24/7 hysteria coming from the majority of the TV coverage

78. Rest in Peace Mr. Jennings.
With the glaring exception of a total bullshit question to General Clark in one of the Democratic primary debates last year, he was about as close to a straight-shooter as there ever was in the MSM.

He had a way of conveying what he REALLY felt about what was going on, and what was being said, with a wry grin, or a certain inflection in his voice...

If there was an anchor that was one of "us" it was him.

He will be sorely missed.

Godspeed.

80. R.I.P. Peter Jennings. And, for anyone wanting to quit smoking...
Make a promise to someone else that you will quit. Make it absolute. Use nicotine gum or some other method to help you over the cravings.

Do it cold turkey: decide in advance when your last cigarette EVER is going to be. Make it a memorable time (New Year's, birthday, or the like).

Then just do it. Ride out the cravings. Don't leave yourself open to the possibility of having even one more cigarette, ever, in your entire life.

The most important thing is to make it an absolute, serious, public committment to someone else. Maybe even more than one person, e.g., your spouse, parents, and children. Set up "check-ins" with them where you will be held to account for your success (or lack of) in quitting. Allow yourself even one cigarette and you will be smoking forever. Don't forget that.

Don't disappoint that person (people). You can do it. And you will be so proud of yourself.

Good luck.

122. Stop It Stop It Stop It
Manipulative, emotional-blackmailing control freaks are the reasons I started smoking in the first place. The guy's dead, let the body cool down before you use it to get people to do what you want.

If a smoker is to quit, they gotta do it for themselves.

Sorry to go Yankee on your ass, but it's a sore point.

140. I got that you were sincere!
I am sorry that you received such a harsh response. I was reading all these threads and smokers' pain was resonating for me as well. I quit, and I can't believe this, but it is either 3 or 4 years ago in January! I can't believe I will have to figure out which it is! I smoked 30 years, camel straights, or roll your own. Granted I never smoked more then a pack a day and for the last decade more like a guilty 1/2 pack, then down to 1/4 pack the last 5 years. I loved smoking...loved it. I always joke that it will be the only thing good about a terminal illness...I will smoke again...

But I won't.

After the harsh reply you got, I guess I will refrain from sharing how I did it. Unlike the previous poster, I drank up every bit of advice when I wanted to quit, unless it was from my immediate family. So If anyone wants to PM me for some advice / ideas...I have some.

Again thank you for your sincere wish to help someone who might be reading about PJ's death and is now in turmoil about their smoking addiction.

92. RIP Peter Jennings
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 11:59 PM by LibertyorDeath
Jennings, Peter (1938- )

Peter Jennings in 1965 became the youngest national network news anchor ever appointed in the U.S. He was 27. Unfortunately, an expected audience increase didn't materialize. Critics blamed his Canadian background, youth and lack of worldly experience.

But in 1983 Peter was appointed anchor and senior editor of World News Tonight and went on to gain international acclaim.

Peter was born in Toronto, son of Charles Jennings who was the first Canadian news announcer to broadcast nationally and later became a CBC vice-president.

By the age of nine, Peter had his own half-hour weekly children's radio show on CBC, called Peter's People. On leaving school, he started work in a bank but followed his father into broadcasting in 1959, joining radio station CFJR Brockville, Ont. He provided CBC with coverage of a train wreck and as a result was offered his first TV job - at CJOH-TV Ottawa when it went on-air in 1961. Michael Nolan, in his book CTV-The Network That Means Business, noted that Peter first became popular as host of a teenage dance program called Club 13.

Peter moved into news and in 1963 became co-anchor of the CTV National News. CTV was new and at that time its national news was broadcast from CJOH-TV.

Peter was noticed by ABC and moved to New York in 1964 to anchor a segment of ABC-TV's evening news, jumping the following year into the national slot.

The ratings were disappointing, with Peter competing against figures like Walter Cronkite on CBS. After three years ABC made him a foreign correspondent. In 1971 he received an award for reporting on the civil war in Bangladesh and at about that time he was appointed head of the ABC News Middle East bureau in Beirut, where he established the first U.S. news bureau in the Arab world. A profile of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat won him a Peabody Award in 1974. The same year he was in Washington briefly as correspondent for ABC's A.M. America, but in 1975 he went to London as chief foreign correspondent for ABC-TV. There he anchored the international section of ABC's World News Tonight until he moved back to New York and assumed leadership of the entire show.

During the Gulf War, Peter's experience in the Middle East gave him a leg up on other U.S. network anchors, and in 1991 ABC-TV became recognized as the U. S. network with the most popular national newscast.

Among his numerous awards were more than a dozen Emmys. The Boston Globe said in 1995 that Edward R. Murrow had passed the torch to Peter Jennings.

Robert Goldberg and Gerald Jay Goldberg wrote a biography called Anchors: Brokaw, Jennings, Rather, and the evening news. Peter's books include The Century and The Century for Young People, co-authored with Todd Brewster, an ABC colleague. He also co-authored In Search of America with Todd Brewster.

99. He was a prodigy in his own right.

He was also fortunate to have been born in a broadcasting family.

Mr. Jennings was like a rare comet, won't see another one like him again in our lifetimes.

RIP Peter.

RIP Peter Jennings. He drove me a bit crazy in the Dem Primaries in 2004 but I'm so sad to see him pass. I grew up on him and, Brokaw and Rather, and now they are gone replaced by the strangest of men... Sad all together.

I'm aware that Rush Limbaugh used him as a target for a lot of bile over the years. Rush undoubtedly believed Mr. Jennings envied his good looks, and sense of suave.

if they wanted him to go easy on a story.

I mean, it was kind of obvious we weren't gonna see him again, but this officially marks the passing of the network evening newscast as anything other than an elaborate 30-minute corporate infomercial.

107. Peter Jennings was like a family friend,
whom I invited into my home every night. He had a sense of warmth about him like no one else. He will be greatly missed and irreplacable. This hit me especially hard tonight, as it's also the 3rd anniversary of my dear husbands passing. I'm sure he's enjoying the presence of the "heavenly Anchormen" tonight, like he did when we watched him together. I went to the Yahoo news board to post a farewell, and it turned my stomach!! The "trolls" are out in force tonight. Is it a full moon? or are they all drunken, crazy, idiots like their leader? I left a short message and told them that they were all following the "example" set by the "HEAD TROLL" No heart, no feelings, no compassion ! Also let them know that "KARMA" is a bitch!!O8)

110. My own little epitaph I just posted onmy website
Which is at its core is an independent journalism site.

From the Editor: Anyone in the last 25 odd years who has picked up a pen and notepad and prepared to record an answer or learned the art and eithics of reporting events to an uninformed public feels a loss today. Anyone who has respect for the institution of Journalism and the vital role of our free press should pay homage today to a man who, if not in the same league as Murrow and Cronkite, was definitely in the same ballpark and was an anchor and reporter of integrity until the end. Peter Jennings has died at the age of 67 of lung cancer. Good journey to you Peter from a long time fan and admirer of your style, your class and your hunger for the truth that all of your profession should share.

128. Another victim
I am very sad to hear about Peter Jennings. I cried when he announced he had lung cancer and I cried today. My father was diagnosed with a similar form of lung cancer in the fall of 1998. My father was one of the lucky ones and he has been cancer free for over 5 years now. I prayed that Mr. Jennings would be so lucky. I know this news will be very hard on my father. I wish Mr. Jennings would have shown the world what an ugly and extremely shameful disease lung cancer is. When Mr. Jennings announced he had lung cancer he felt the need to explain that he was a long time smoker. When my family discusses my father's cancer, people always ask "did he smoke?" There is a stigma attached to lung cancer you don't get with other cancers. My prayers go out to his family. I understand the guilt, pain and helplessness completely.

135. You make a very important point with this post!
I do cancer research with lung cancer cell lines and am shocked by the puritanic attitude toward lung cancer. It is the biggest cancer killer and a large percentage of its victims HAVE NEVER SMOKED! Yet funding for research into lung cancer is WAY less than for breast, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic! It's very hard to get funding to do research with lung cancer. Many believe that it is due to the stigma connected with smoking--the attitude that if you have it, you brought it on yourself. It's truly disgraceful and those of us in the business, who have also lost loved ones to this killer are furious about it.

Jennings was the only anchor who couldn't completely veil his disgust with the Bush administration. He always had a subtle "yeah, right" tone in his voice as he delivered the White House version of events.

My wife and I grew up with Peter Jennings. He was our favorite of the evening anchors. This is really sad.

I loathed his baiting Wes Clark during the Primary debate. Mike Moore called Jr. "the Deserterrrrrrrrrrrrr" as a joke like a Pro Wrestling Annoucer announces the talent onto the stage.

NEW YORK - Peter Jennings was the face of ABC News.

The urbane Canadian-born broadcaster delivered the nightly news to Americans over five decades. He was there for every big story, be it war or weather.

Jennings, who announced in April that he had lung cancer, died Sunday at his New York home, ABC News President David Westin said in a statement. He was 67.

168. R.I.P Jenning
He was part of my after high school classes routine. . . I would go to Soccer Pratice. . . Come home take a quick shower have a sandwich or hamburger and then watch the 6:30 News Live with Peter Jennings. In fact, I think I can honestly say Watching Peter Jennings is what finally got me into watching and paying attention the news simply for the fact he was what was on after soccer practice. It stuck with me after high school ended if I came home from work early enough he be the first thing I watch during dinner. Once he left the air due to cancer though watching it wasn't the same and I stopped. . . I didn't stop paying attention to the news but mostly I've been getting my news via internet sources and newspaper. I've always enjoyed his broadcasts and liked the man himself. He had his faults but he was better than a lot of the broadcasters that have been produced as of late. By me he will be missed. R.I.P Jennings. . .
