Bush Remembers Jennings As Distinguished

The Associated Press

President Bush remembered ABC anchorman Peter Jennings on Monday as a distinguished journalist who became a familiar face in millions of households.

"Laura and I were saddened to learn about the death of Peter Jennings," the president said. "Peter Jennings had a long and distinguished career as a news journalist. He covered many important events, events that helped define the world as we know it today.

"A lot of Americans relied upon Peter Jennings for their news. He became a part of the life of a lot of our fellow citizens, and he will be missed," Bush said. "May God bless his soul."

The president paused to talk about Jennings before boarding Air Force One for a trip to New Mexico to sign a major energy bill.

2. "But," Bush said, "I wish he'd gotten the story on my service right."
Okay, he didn't really say that, but it's just so easy to believe, isn't it?

3. Sure, he can comment on Jennings (May he RIP)
But makes no noise re: Cindy Sheehan wanting answers about the death of her son, and accountability for the deaths of so many more.

BTW--when first reading the headline, thought was, "Bush has a memory? How can that be when he has no brain?"

9. You can't expect him to risk his "hate-america" right wing base
by talking to the mother of a fallen soldier, can you?

his base doesn't give a shit about our soldiers in combat or those who have come home and are dealing with injuries & PTSD.. much less those who have come back in coffins. Talking to the mother of a fallen soldier will just legitimize the fact that we (the u.s.) were WRONG to invade a country that was no threat to us.

12. Look closely at the text
of his statement.

There isn't much praise there at all....it's generic at best.

Safely in the middle....doesn't piss off people who liked Jennings but also plays to his RW base by not being effusive over Jennings.

16. Bush has rarely sounded more feeble-minded than today.
"He covered important events."

"People got their news from him."

Just describing what Jennings did for a living.

17. he actually never says a single nice thing about Jennings.
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 12:59 PM by patcox2
He says Jennings reported on very important stories (not that Jennings was important), he says that people trusted him, but not that he deserved trust, its all carefully worded to sound like praise but it really isn't praise.

Its kinda like I was writing a eulogy for Bush and I said "he occupied the highest office in our nation, an office which is accorded the greatest respect, an office which some of americas's greatest leaders also held. Many people admired him for what they saw as his firm resolve and strong leadership."

21. Jennings would have been unable to return the compliment.
I didn't rate Jennings very highly, but in any case Bush--a sub-literate who declares journalists "assholes"--is no one to judge.
