CINDY SHEEHAN TO BE ARRESTED THURSDAY
Cindy Sheehan to Be Arrested Thursday
by David Swanson
Mon Aug 8th, 2005 at 09:49:41 PDT
Cindy Sheehan phoned me from Texas a few minutes ago to say that she's been informed that beginning Thursday, she and her companions will be considered a threat to national security and will be arrested. Coincidentally, Thursday is the day that Rice and Rumsfeld visit the ranch, and Friday is a fundraiser event for the haves and the have mores. Cindy said that she and others plan to be arrested.

Never forget what the US Military got away with at Waco.
Texans just don't give a damn about other people. If you go there and don't sound Texan you are a stupid foreigner! If you don't speak stupid bushisms in every sentence, they presume you went to the wrong school! Make sure, if you do go, that you say nice things about a goat and golf! You might even take a lesson or two in Texan as a language before you go or if you speak Spanish, ask everything in that language like: "where is the big hacienda"!

is go out there and talk with her for 15 minutes. Instead, he's going to show everyone what an insensitive shit-head he is and "steadfastly" refuse to talk to a grieving Mother. What a Dick, I am SO fucking ashamed that this arrested development, adolescent represents our country on the world stage.
He's not only an embarrassment to the United States, he's an embarrassment to the Human Race.
Fuck you bush!

To Cindy and her supporters; hang in there. By Thursday there will be thousands of people there with you and they'll have to arrest them all. You won't even have a chance to sit in your cell before you're bailed out and represented by the best Lawyers money can buy. You're right, george bush is dead wrong. Hang in there babe, we're all behind you.

211. Very interesting, Nigel - Thank you and Welcome to DU!
Could you comment further on both? I did a cursory Wikipedia search and found both topics very interesting and timely.

You point to the Bonus Army of 1932 which was a massive protest over veteran's benefits and led, years later, to the GI Bill of Rights, and to the legend of Boadicea (Boudicca), a Celtic warrior woman who led a tribal army and fought occupying Roman forces.

Wikipedia entries:

Bonus Army
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonus_army

Boudicca (Boadicea)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boadicea

"A new film is planned for release in 2006 entitled Warrior <4>, written by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, directed by Gavin O'Connor, and produced by Mel Gibson."

Warrior (2006 movie about Boudica) site:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409457/

"Plot Outline: A drama about the warrior Boudica and her rise from peasant roots to become a military leader who led Britain against the Romans in 61 A.D., and who was posthumously crowned the first queen of the empire."

258. Nat'l Sec. Threat? The threat of Cindy is what she & all the Mom's across
this country are going to do to Bush's already dismal poll ratings....

I met Cindy and have seen her speak publicly and heard her story...she is a very powerful force. When I met her, I intuitively knew right then and there that she is the biggest threat that this administration fears...the voice of a mother who lost her child who will be able to rally a nation....

Let them arrest her and watch how fast every mother across this country, including myself descends on Crawford, Washington DC and wherever else we need to be.

hell hath no fury like a woman scorned? No, hell hath no fury like Mother's scorned.... :grr:

265. I thought this might happen -but
then I dismissed the notion thinking the bushies couldn't be that stupid... apparently they are that stupid

from a political standpoint -- this is the dumbest thing they could do

We had company over the weekend so I didn't catch much "tv-spews" -- I was off from work yesterday (monday) and did channel surf the tv-spews -- majority of the stories were about Peter Jennings, didn't see one story about Cindy Sheehan

according to another posting on the DU - Cindy Sheehan was scheduled to have several major "spews" interviews - but they all canceled. They must have gotten their orders to not cover her story.

Lack of coverage in major "spews" outlets would have squashed the story all by itself - but if she's arrested - not only will it get air time but it will also elevate Cindy Sheehan's status from a protester to martyr. and given the poll numbers about Iraq - this is a very dangerous thing for the bushies to do...

http://www.pollingreport.com/

Rhetorical question: Would bush* refuse to speak to Sheehan if she were there with "support bush" signs and wanted to thank bush* for the Iraq war? Would they arrest her if she gushed with praise for bush?

20. Yes, I certainly hope so.
The police in Crawford SHOULD arrest Cindy Sheehan. They should very openly hold out the handcuffs, with the lights twirling on top of the squad cars, and escort her to the car. Take her to jail.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm supporting her. But this will give her even more publicity than before.

Plus, she might be safer in jail. I understand Secret Service vehicles are trying to run them off the road. She might get hit or killed while out walking along the road.

BUSH.....you have just met your Waterloo.

52. Waterloo, waterloo, where will you....
meet your Waterloo
Every puppy has his day everybody has to pay everybody has to meet his Waterloo (course)

Now ol' Adam was the first in history with an apple he was tempted and deceived
Just for spite the devil made him take a bite
And that's where ol' Adam met his Waterloo
Waterloo Waterloo...

Little General Napoleon of France tried to conquer the world but lost his pants
Met defeat known as Bonaparte's reterat and that's where Napoleon met his Waterloo
Waterloo Waterloo...

Now a feller who's darling proved untrue took her life but he lost his too
Now he swings where the little birdie sings
And that's where Tom Dooley met his Waterloo
Waterloo Waterloo... (Sonewall Jackson, old country song)

(My verse)

Now the President, compfy in Crawford, TEX
Heard a mother, was gonna kick his pants
So the presscorps desended on his ranch
And there's were the Chimpster meet his Waterloo.
Waterloo Waterloo...

153. I bet it's a damned bluff intended to intimidate her
into leaving. They've got another think coming. They know that arresting her will be political suicide--bet they change their minds---but, of course, I do hope I'm wrong. I well remember the civil rights movement and the arrests and beatings of blacks who protested with non-violent resistance---it changed the world---it also worked in Poland, India, etc.----This could be huge---people won't put up with arresting a grieving mother for nothing more than exercising her right of free speech and protest.

Why is Thursday the magic day? If she becomes a threat to National Security on Thursday, why is it that she's not already a threat to National Security? Intimidation tactics. If she was really a threat to NS, the PRUDENT thing to do would be to arrest her now. Waiting till Thursday is just a bunch of BUSHshit.

204. Thursday is for a reason. HERE IS HOW TO HELP!
I'm getting emails pretty much hourly from people who are talking with those there, or were there.

Apparently, on Thursday Bush plans to go for a ride to a friend's house, and would have to pass by where Cindy & friends are camped.

Talk is they may move arrests up to Wednesday.

One blogger, Judith, has written:
If they arrest her, people need to swamp the White House with calls and mail and ask what the hell Bush means by supporting the troops... I guess his idea of support is to arrest the parents after the troops are dead and of no use to him.

Crawford Peace House is a house in town that was bought by progressives after Bush moved there, so our side could have a place to assemble and to serve as an oasis.

Got this from Code Pink in Austin:

Forward far and wide.....

Cindy Sheehan, Diane Wilson and several others are dedicated to staying at their roadside camp (located 5 miles from George Bush's ranch) until Bush agrees to speak to Cindy about the loss of her son Casey in Iraq.

PLEASE JOIN THEM!!!! CodePink Austin came up Monday to bring supplies and do whatever else we can do. We hope to come back as we can to camp with these great women. If you want to travel with us send us an e-mail at codepinkaustin@yahoo.com <>.

If you can come on your own see directions below.

If you can bring any of the following or contact us and we'll bring them for you--- Tiffany at (310) 836-8175 or tiffany@codepinkalert.org <>
Whitney at (323) 595-9169 or whit@codepinkalert.org <>
(or donate as per message at bottom to the Peace House):

Food and Water
Coffee
First aid kit
Tarps/canopy
Table(s)
Batteries
Flashlights
Wet wipes
Banner supplies
Rope (& other things to hang banners and signs)
nails & hammer
Bug spray
Ice chests/ Ice

Need to borrow: Ladder(s)
Car lighter adapter/converter for electric appliances
Tents
Table(s)
anything else you can think of...

Thanks for all of your hard work and commitment to the anti-war movement.

Peace,

CodePink Austin

"A threat to Nat'l security?"

so I understand how he feels less secure, but for the rest of us, I think they are overdoing it a bit. Maybe if they were to concentrate instead on the people in the White House that outed one of our own CIA agents in a time of war, we as a nation might feel more secure.

Flanked by miles of pasture, Sheehan spoke with reporters while clutching two photographs, one of her son in uniform, and the other, a baby picture, when he was seven months old.

She said she decided to come to Crawford a few days ago after Bush said that fallen U.S. troops had died for a noble cause and that the mission must be completed. "I want to ask the president, `Why did you kill my son? What did my son die for?" she said, her voice cracking with emotion. "Last week, you said my son died for a noble cause' and I want to ask him what that noble cause is?"

White House spokesman Trent Duffy said response that Bush also wants the troops to return home safely. "Many of the hundreds of families the president has met with know their loved one died for a noble cause and that the best way to honor their sacrifice is to complete the mission," Duffy said. "It is a message the president has heard time and again from those he has met with and comforted. Like all Americans, he wants the troops home as soon as possible."

The group marched about a half-mile before local law enforcement officials stopped them at a bend in the road, still four to five miles from the ranch's entrance. Capt. Kenneth Vanek of the McLennan County Sheriff's Office said the group was stopped because some marchers ignored instructions to walk in the ditch beside the road, not on the road. "If they won't cooperate, we won't," Vanek said.

8. Maybe they could seek a court injunction against the Secret Service.
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 11:59 AM by phiddle
The constitution supposedly protects the citizens from arbitrary exercize of authority. Such a move---seeking an injunction---would guarantee press coverage over the next few days.

282. I don't think there's any need to get all hostile or jump to conclusions.
I was referring to a previous statement about the constitution protecting citizens against "arbitrary abuse of power", and noting that that was the situation that they had in mind when granting those citizens the right to defend themselves. I've never been interesting in having anything to do with guns, but the abuses of power are piling up and I'm truly getting worried.

and/or a trespassing and highway safety dodge. At least that is my impression from the thread on GD. It would be best if it was on film.

It seems like a bit of a Kent State moment that might be shaping up. I don't mean a shooting, but a revelation to the public of the administration's fear of the anti-war movement, through the arrest of this grief stricken mother.

In my state, the highway department has a 5 foot right-of-way on each side of the road. Beyond that, property is privately owned with exception of public parks or any property owned by municipalities.

Maybe its different there. I was just wondering if it is truly public property.

I liked this Kos entry the best:

now we know... (4.00 / 3)

According to the Bush administration... what constitutes a threat to national security?

Letting Osama escape? No...

Outing a CIA operative? No....

Destabilizing the Middle East? No...

Potentially interfering with a GOP fundraiser? Yes!

42. If a grieving American mother and some vets for peace are threats
to national security, how can b*sh claim he has made American safer? If national security is compromised by a middle aged, sad, tired and thirsty woman, the military, Patriot Act, torture at Gitmo and in Iraq are all pointless! If Cindy and her companions are a threat, the people in charge should be up on charges for they have made the nation unsafe!

National Security is not the same thing as protecting the junta. PNACers are NOT the nation. If Cindy and her companions are arrested, it is only for the convenience of the crooks and liars running the government.

Who here feels threated by Cindy Sheehan? Is she the cause of your economic problems? Is she the reason for high fuel costs which also raise the price of food? Is Cindy promoting hate and violence? Is she implementing policies which make it easier for terrorists to recruit new members? Is she leaving borders unprotected and cargo containers uninspected in US ports? Is it her doing that state National Guard units are away from the nation they are suppose to guard? Did she steal all the money missing in Iraq?

If they arrest these peaceful protesters using National Security as a reason, they are admitting they are afraid of the American People! WE ARE THE NATION! They declare war on We The People when they do this.

b*sh erred in going to Crawford. He is an easy prisoner there and it is his own doing. Send Cindy some food and water. Send the Coward of Crawford some diapers, cuz he is shittin his own britches if he considers Cindy Sheehan as a threat to National Security.

You've put things in perspective beautifully. You say, "If a grieving American mother and some vets for peace are threats"

If national security is compromised by a middle aged, sad, tired and thirsty woman, the military, Patriot Act, torture at Gitmo and in Iraq are all pointless! The arrogant coward is only showing what a wimp, and miserable excuse for a human being he is. He struts and staggers at hand-picked appearances, assured of an adoring audience by making sure the audience agrees with him. He is surrounded by huge numbers of SS agents, and acts so cocky when he doesn't have the courage to face this poor mother.

What a disgrace, and national embarrassment he is. The whole world hates him, and the image he tried to cultivate as a rugged, man of the earth, is nothing but a cheap disguise, ripped away by Cindy's courage.

44. This was bound to happen
First there was "Free Speech Zones", and the courts for the most part failed on that, then Bush was able to "create" enemy combatants,
and Congress let him.

Did anyone really doubt that something like this was that far down the road? The arrest of an American citizen, considered a threat to
national security, when all she is doing is guaranteed by the 1st Amendment. And while she's being arrested, the great U.S. military
which is sworn to defend these rights, is fighitng and dying so that
someone else can have them. But they won't fight so that Cindy Sheehan can have those rights, they look the other way and like good
wind up toys do what they are told, and die in the process.

Let's face it, the U.S. military has failed in its duty to defend and support the U.S. Constitution, and now that they will follow
every order that BushCo gives, this country is on the path to darkness.

And please, no comments on what can they do? They could do something,
but they are afraid. To patrol a street in Iraq, that takes courage,
but we need a different type of courage form those in uniform. The courage it takes to stand up for principles, to truly perform their duty.

Unfortunately, there are not many who have that kind of courage, at least not now. Perhaps, when they hear of a family member arrested for just trying to use those rights that Americans once had, maybe then the U.S. military will get the courage to do their duty and defend that document that is the DNA of this country.

We can always hope.

76. Pardon my tin foil, but I have ALWAYS felt part of the reason to deploy
troops overseas was to keep them away from the real fight to preserve American liberty which would be waged at home.

Those troops are basically held hostage in Iraq. They were dropped into a situation of the PNACers' making and have to fight or die there. Long swim to get home and protect American Mothers like Cindy Sheehan.

Remember back in the last days of the Soviet Union? The power elite sent troops out to face their mothers and grandmothers. For the most part, the troops did not fight against the people for the rulers. The junta learned something from that.

Getting troops into harm's way abroad made things safer at home ONLY for the crooks and liars.

Let us hope there is some brass with real brass left in command who know the oath they took was to a nation, a Constitution and the Office of CIC, not to any individual squatter who wrongly claims their allegiance and obedience!

And let's hope nobody in the top ranks is stupid enough to have the real codes in that briefcase that follows the chimp around! There should be no doubt that the administration would use those codes to defend their own cowardly hides if the going gets tough enough for them.

I agree it's horseshit that she's a threat to national security.

We need thousands of people down there before thursday....

this *IS* the revolution we've been hoping for. We've got to take a stand now. Let Cindy be our shining beacon and let's use this energy all across the internet. Every person will know who Cindy is before she gets arrested.

There is no power stronger on earth than a mother's love... And weed has met his downfall in this one!

176. I live in Texas...
I hope Cindy and her supporters have insect repellent, sun screen, water, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to have big umbrellas. When I was young, my granny took her "parasol" with her if she was out in the heat of the day. It provides at least a little shade, and will be useful in case of rain. Another item, although I hope it's not needed, might be a snake bite kit, if there is some kind available.

Of course, the biggest snake of all is cornered on the pig-farm, unable to face a woman whose son he sent to die, so that his buddies would add more billions to the billions they already have.

97. I have my doubts about the story.
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 01:24 PM by antifaschits
First, if she was going to be arrested, they would NEVER announce it. They would just do it, in the middle of the night. (Think Elian Gonzales)

Second, if they wanted something to happen, they would first "start" something and involve the locals. It has a ring of plausible deniability that this White House craves.

Lastly, They really don't care one whit about her. She is a pimple on an insignificant mosquito, for all they care. (And I am sure they have polling numbers on this) They also know that if this story does capture the imagination of the people, and later, the MSM, that they can concoct some story about good and specific intel on the whereabouts of Osama bin Missing at the drop of the hat. They can easily swing attention away, anytime, anyplace, any reason.

The reason why they are so successful is that they have no shame. Not one bit. Not a speck. Truth and honesty and integrity are PR words, not descriptions of behavior. They are crass, craven and willing to do and say anything to maintain power.

We don't have any national security. Can anyone say September 11 with bush asleep at the wheel? How about Valerie Plame? How about unguarded ordnance in Iraq, a breeding ground of terrorist hornets nests? How about unprotected nuclear facilities right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.?

to bush's security (or insecurity). That pseudo-swagger can only be maintained by having his "friends" around him agreeing and not facing the enemy (anyone who disagrees openly)
His self confidence depends on that. He is an insecure coward outside of bushlala land.
He spent time with her in his vacant, disrespectful way and she committed the crime of not being impressed and of telling the truth about it.
Another meeting would be too much. She won't take his vague niceties, faked compassion and non-answers and that is all he has to offer.

She could be a threat to his fund raising session planned there at end of week. She could be a threat to his plummeting reputation. She threatens security by people seeing these soldiers are real people with real lives and real loved ones and the loss came in an illegal war for false reasons with horrible planning and without justification.

Oh yes, she is a threat.

114. MSN Poll for Bush Handling of Iraq War
Arrest Cindy Sheehan for threat to national security! What a joke!
I think Cindy and friends protesting should make a citizens arrest of Bush, Rummy, and Condi for war crimes against humanity!

MSN has a poll up on whether you approve of Bush's handling of Iraq.
Right now, over 80% DISAPPROVE. It's connected to the Cindy Sheehan story.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8851911/

If the Feds try to arrest Cindy, I think Repugs running for Congress in '06 can kiss it good-bye.

I hope they do try to arrest her! Bring'em on! should be the rallying cry!

Spell & Spell issues call to action to Texas attorneys

Cindy has confirmed with Buddy Spell, her attorney, that the Thursday arrest threat has indeed been conveyed. Accordingly, we are "lawyering up".

Below is an email which is currently being forward to ACLU and NLG attorneys across the state of Texas.

If you know of Texas attorney who might be willing to volunteer her of his services, please PM me through political switchboard.

Attn: Pro bono lawyers
Date: August 8, 2005
Buddy Spell is trying to coordinate a legal team to assist him in representing his clients which include Cindy Sheehan and Dennis Kyne who are currently holding a vigil near the President’s ranch. Buddy’s license is limited to Louisiana only and he requires local counsel immediately.

Authorities have announced that they are planning to arrest Cindy and others on Thursday.

We need all interested pro bono lawyers to meet at Crawford Peace House

...Finally, kudos to Cindy Sheehan for speaking truth to power in Crawford, TX (news.baou, via buzzflash - http://news.baou.com/main.php?action=recent&rid=20396 ). I'm saddened, but not suprised, the president would not meet with her. I delivered a petition signed by more than 560,000 right to the White House and could not even get in the White House.

I can't take it. It's only the second time in my life I've ever done such a thing, but by God this woman deserves an answer. A real answer, not the party line. I've asked them to contact all the people they can, to push for media coverage, and to support Cindy against the vicious attacks that have already started. I want to see people speaking out. John Kerry, Howard Dean, Max Cleland, Hillary Clinton, Senators, Representatives, veterans groups and citizens rights groups, political activists everywhere - get up, get out there, and help! Hold GWB accountable!
All it takes to have a powerful machine is support. So get all the supporters you can, now's the time.
I had already decided to go to DC for the sept 24th demonstration ( I wish I could be in Crawford, but PA is a long way) before this started. This only solidifies it. I dont care if I have to hitchhike to DC now, I will be there.

216. Directions to vigil.
This came from Code Pink Austin.

To Crawford from Austin:

Take IH-35 North towards Waco. As you enter the Waco area exit Hwy 6 to FM
185 which will take you directly into Crawford.

Go straight through the light at FM 317. Take a right at the Luthern Church
(Prairie Chapel Rd). Travel approx. 3 miles (the road will wind around a
bunch). The camp is on the left where Prairie Chapel Rd. intersects Morgan
Rd.

Another route to Crawford:
Take IH-35 North. In Beltan take the Killeen exit (Hwy 190) in Belton.
Turn left as if you are going to Killeen. As the road curves, go straight
on FM 317. You will pass through several small towns and will end up in
Crawford. Turn left at the first light.

Take a right at the Luthern Church (Prairie Chapel Rd). Travel approx. 3
miles (the road will wind around a bunch). The camp is on the left where
Prairie Chapel Rd and Morgan Rd. intersect.

Crawford Peace House might be a good place to stop if you're in town anyway---
In the center of Crawford, Texas on Hwy185 and the railroad tracks
9142 5th Street Crawford, Tx. 76638-3037

the Vigil is on Prairie Chapel road near the entrance to Bush's ranch

The Peace House phone is being reactivated should be back Monday afternoon

Part of me is wondering is this is just a stall, 'cause Dumbya's handlers might be planning some major stupid shit to happen before Thursday, trying to detract from Cindy's arrest, or even trying to detract from all the attention she's getting. Or, maybe they just don't know what to do.
I can't believe they'd be SO STUPID to arrest her.
But then again, this is Dimson and Company we're talking about.
Does anyone positively know the name of the person who told Cindy she was going to be arrested on Thursday???

You'll just look like the fucking fascist you are, in front of the global media.

The Crawford paper (Lonestar Iconoclast) has a nice bit on Cindy today http://www.iconoclast-texas.com/

The paper endorsed Kerry in 2004, for those who don't know.

Anyway, American moms (and other relatives) who have had their kids killed in Iraq, will NOT like seeing Cindy cuffed and stuffed.

I see a storm a'brewin' in Crawford.

Of course she's not a thread to national security. BUSH and his neocon, corporate fascists are the threat to GLOBAL security. That's fucking obvious.

Imagine, if you will, every opponent of this war with access to a car, with the time to travel down to Crawford, DESCENDING ON BUSH'S RANCH LIKE A PLAGUE OF LOCUSTS.

SWARM! SWARM! BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!

What you gonna do then, Bush, you fascist? Arrest 30,000 people in front of every media outlet camera on the face of the fucking EARTH?

That's what we need: Basically like a Burningman festival in Crawford...HUGE numbers of people, as big as any March On Washington...and then when Bushbaby goes back to D.C., they follow his ass and camp out in front of the White House, just hounding him...

Don't forget that Bush is the same fascist who used to arrest protesters who were picketing outside of the Governor's mansion in Texas.

He'd have them nabbed and STRIPSEARCHED for doing nothing other than walking back and forth in front of the masion with signs.

It appears Cindy and her friends are peaceful, its more like a scare tactic than anything.

If Bush, Rove, and Cheney had half of the cunning usually attributed to them, they would have seen to it that a basket of food and bottles of ice water were sent out to Cindy, along with a note of regret that the Emperor was unable to meet with her just now. What great PR that would have been for them.

But no, they let her get heat stroke (see below). What exactly will it take for the rest of the American people to realize that this is really who they are?

letter posted by a VFP friend of mine:

Hi All,

Cindy Sheehan is being carefully attended by Hadi Jawad and Johnny Wolf at Crawford Peace House (www.crawfordpeacehouse.org). They will be hosting her, sustaining her and getting her medical and legal help when needed. The peace house needs donations to do this...please spread the word to donate via their website or the address there.

The last information I have had she is well but offline (a hardship for Cindy) and the effort continues. She recovered from heat stroke aggravated by law enforcement's refusal to allow us to return to her with more water and shade. I await further word from Hadi or Cindy.

Kind regards, Lane

236. 1 of the things that ended Afghan war for USSR was moms wouldn't take it
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 08:54 PM by billbuckhead
Even a totalitarian nation can't piss off the vast majority of it's moms. This is America's version of the USSR's Afghanistan. Check out these similarities.

"Some sources focus on public opinion and the eventual escalation of protests during and then after the war, starting with underground papers and protest demonstrations at soldier's funerals and grave sites (which were on small scale during the war, however). Although any protest was being immediately and severely put down (for the very act of opposition against the political establishment was regarded as high treason) no force could control the popular discontent of the Soviets, thus, protests were becoming more frequent and better populated. "I believed - I really believed," said a retired Soviet schoolteacher, of her lifelong party membership, in Fall of 1990. A Russian biologist related in early 1992 that "they said we were the happiest people in the world. How were we to know differently?" (Arnold, 200). Such actions are indicative of not only the mass frustration but also of political break-down.

According to Arnold, the Soviet Empire stood on three pillars: Military, KGB, and Communist party, and argues that the Afghan War ate into these pillars thus weakening them to the point of break-down. For example, when key military and KGB commanders refused to follow Dmitris Yazov and Valdmiri Kryuchkoo's commands, in August 1991, to storm the Russian Parliament where Boris Yeltsin was holding out, it was a decisive signal that the chain of command had lost its effective control. Also noteworthy is that among the civilians who manned the barricades around the parliament building and defied the tanks, were a sizable contingent of the afgantsy.

A channel through which a number of the Soviet people expressed their anger, frustration, and discontent was the independent free press. In magazines like Ogonyok people's letters were being published and the journalists gave accounts of the war based on personal experience. Two of my source, Small Fires and The Hidden War mainly focus on such publications. To show veteran's discontent with the government, I am including part of a letter, written by an afgantsy Senior Lieutenant, to the Ogonyok magazine: ...I will send you a letter with all the details about how some there "did battle," received and then were deprived of battle decorations, falsified the lists of those who would receive decorations, redistributed equipment and personal gear, about what our superiors drank, what the higher-ups had for dinner and what the majority ate, where goods for the Afghan population disappeared to, how the officers made cripple of their soldiers and ignored murders and suicides, about the tragic events in battle that were committed with the full knowledge and under the orders of high officials, how we lived and how they, the "regimental elite," lived, about how lists of those decorated were not issued according to the rules because of the personal enmity of superiors to their subordinates, how housekeepers, bathhouse attendants, and gardeners were reward, and in general about anything and everything." (Borovik 286-7)

241. This is like Hoover and the Bonus Expeditionary Force all over again
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 09:26 PM by despairing optimist
Hoover's approach: call in the cavalry to fire on WWI vets down on their luck who wanted only to collect the war bonus promised them. A young officer named Patton had the dubious honor of executing that order. I'm not sure how many of the BEF vets were killed or injured, but Hoover's popularity, already weakened by his hands-off approach to the ravages of the Great Depression, really plummeted after that, and FDR won the next presidential election by the biggest landslide in history.

The BEF marched on Washington a second time after FDR was sworn in, and on that occasion Eleanor Roosevelt greeted the vets: with flowers. They got the war bonus they had to fight and die for--twice.

Cindy Sheehan is the right person at the right time. She is in the vanguard of a new movement seeking justice and re-empowerment of the people just as the BEF vets did before her. As such she is in the great tradition of Americans who stood up to their government and its leaders when they were wrong and fought for change. She is a true leader and a patriot, so it is no wonder that our sorry excuse for a president cannot summon the courage to engage her. What she has inside her, he never had inside him, and so he cowers behind his sycophants and thugs like the pathetic tyrant that he is. If Cindy is arrested and martyred for the cause of truth and peace, George W. Bush will be known for all time as the embodiment of the corruption, deceit, shame, and disgrace that he not only allowed but encouraged during his time as president.

This week in Crawford may be more important than next month's demo in DC because it paints Bush the man and his administration in all the lurid colors they deserve, and keeps on painting him right into a corner. I would say that it's a pleasure to donate money to someone who isn't a politician and whose agenda is out there for all to see, but it isn't a game when the country's soul and future are at stake. I will say, though, that it's a pleasure to help someone who makes me proud to be an American--without any party affiliation, label, or other qualification attached to it.

Ed Schultz is a pitchman who is all about Ed Schultz. He doesn't get it. I don't want him in on this. Scratch him and you get kiss-ass underneath. ITs time that people moved en masse for a month long vigil in Crawford. If the facist monkey wants to vacation there fine. Why shouldn't 350,000 others join him? Its time for a general strike to protest government sanctioned torture, war crimes, murder, theft, betrayal and treason. The Media will be forced to cover such a great story. Until the people rise up and new leaders emerge who are not afraid I doubt this goes anywhere. Hightower,Molly and the others are good writers with cottage industries going, they are not leaders and they will not inspire nor would they risk arrest. The people who finally step forward to lead must do so realizing that they will spend half of their time as activists sitting in jail. We need Mario Savios and Martin Kings. Schultz who was a reporter on sports fishing before this stint in political talk is an apologist for the system who is chock full of inane cliches. His 'success' is attributable strictly to his 'style' which panders to the common middle American. His riff is an imitation of Limbaugh's sppeech and intonation. This is essentially why he is on AirAmerica. They are afraid that if they sound too intellectual they will alienate the angry masses of impotent white men and fat women who mainline talk radio as their only means of political education.

276. At least a billion $
worth of that ranch is american tax dollars! The fences, the vehicles including all helicopters and military quick response, the whole security complex including housing for large military contingent, all of the newest communication equipment, (even for media)! A conservative guess would be american tax dollar value at greater than all Saddam's palaces! The only savings at the moment is that the ranch isn't on the gulf or there would be a port with battleships and a few hundred yachts!
I live near several National Forests where one has to have a purchased license to pick a wild mushroom or walk a forest trail! That happened before bushes which are also against the law to pick berries from! Americans have been losing thousands of privileges and it is over due to stop paying for things that will never belong to Americans again!

252. Isn't this how Woodstock got started?
When I last made a blog entry on Cindy and Camp Casey after work early this evening, I'd yet to find out about this arrest threat. I have to wonder what they'd arrest her for, aside from that cowardly "threat to national security" shit. She's surrounded by old hippies, for crissakes.

Hell, this whole brouhaha going on in Crawford (why, O why, did he have to buy a ranch in a town that shares my surname?) now could easily support a blog. I find it hard to think or write about anything else, these days. I think and worry about her when I'm at work. This has touched me on levels that even Paul Hackett's campaign in Ohio didn't the past couple of weeks (speaking of Hackett, he ought to be down there with her, now. He, like Cindy, has the moral currency and if he's smart, he'll want to stay in the public eye and what better way to do that now than in Texas? Besides, he's a lawyer).

I'm sending her a postcard ASAP. I wouldn't be a good liberal if I didn't.

261. Bush is a drunk and Crawford is his watering hole
Someone asked why this pathetic moron retreats to Crawford of all places. Think about it. Move ever so slightly out of the box and invert the accepted norm that he is a 'recovered' drunk. Knowing full well that everything this ape-boy says is the opposite of truth one can readily deduce that he is a full on,shirts to the wind, closet alcoholic who is without question heavily enibreated 25 of his 30 odd days down on the ranch. You can bet your first child that the press corp has known this from day one and could share dozens of harrowing stories. You can also bet that Cheney is the acting Commander in Chief. Its so bizarre and so obvious that it trumps The Manchurian Candidate for fictional surrealism. And yet it is exactly what America wants and what it deserves. Americans have been stupidly indifferent to politics and government pretty much since the 70s. They have been in exquisite denial. Why shouldn't they then participate in fraudulent elections,be ruled by a puppet facist and be bilked for their last pennies by an insatiable war machine of blood thirsty vampires? The sooner this nonculture of Wendy's and Hummers, pornography and sports deities finally reaches bottom the better. Who is to say what the nature of that bottom will be? One thing is for sure. America is responsible for having validated a sick, drunken moron as their President because America is sick and drunken and depraved. Period. Until people realize how far gone this culture is there will be no meaningful change. Taking responsibility is the first step. The Great Depression was a vehicle that forced beleivers in the American myth to face the mirror and kill the image. Then the war with facism that followed was a kind of way that the culture pulled itself up out of the snake pit. But once Hiroshima happened it has been all downhill. The Military-Industrial Complex took over and all pretense of morality and high ground was forever lost and surely distorted. Whats the bottom going to look like this time around?

271. very, very well said Buddha8 *stunned face*
i shouldn't be surprised by the eloquence of anyone who chooses to call themselves Buddha, but yet again I am bowled over amidst my lurking by the words of a newcomer. :hi:

This culture is the lack of one. Or worse yet the premature solidification of one that has Christianity at its base and invisibility at its core. But reality knows better, and so does karma. I've always said, let's clean up the air, let's cut down the waste and the walls, let's make our neighborhoods safe and realize that nothing is permanent>> THEN I'll take it seriously when someone talks about culture. Then we can pop our heads up above the canopy and construct a beautiful and accepting culture. In the mean time we seem very content only to blame the ills of the world as an inevitability of 'culture'. What a load of crap !

once again, well said, and we'll see what bottom looks like whether we open our eyes or not. Think about it.

253. maybe its starting
I am thinking as I read this that this could be the simple beginning of a real anti-war movement finally, a peoples' movement against Facism. Cindy could start a kind of momentum which could pick up alot of steam. Just as the Freedom marches did down South and Mario Savio at Berkeley in 64'. The movement badly needs to get a human face. Rove and the other dedicated facists already know this. They will try to coopt this woman to defuse the energy but if they are stupid and do nothing and she is arrested then we have a story that the thrill seeking Media will cover. Then more people will become interested in the human side of this facist invasion. The power is only in the peoples' hands. No democrat in Washington can do anything. Most are already bought by corporations. The few with integrity and courage are completely marginalized. That is until a real peoples' movement begins. New leaders need to emerge who are exciting and electrifying. They should come from right out on the street and from simple American homes. No representative or politician is going to put his shrunken balls on the line to stop all this madness and face down facism. What we have right here and right now is a de facto facist state with a 24/7 noise machine spewing lies and propaganda that make lies sound like truths and truths sound like lies. But high personal emotion, people momentum,sit-ins,facing down facist power and a strong human face could just turn the tide. There is absolutely no question in my mind that what remained of a semi-functioning representative system was overthrown in December 00'. The Junta has amassed great concentrated power since then and will do anything, anything at all to hold onto this power. Bush himself is just a moronic puppet who perfectly reflects the sick and fearful underbelly of American consciousness. A crude, ignorant, sadistic and deeply self-centered buffoon. He has held the mirror up to American culture. America must take responsibility for its sickening dark side before it ever removes this canker from its rectum.

257. threat to national security
Yes, now that Bush is through with her son, she's no good to him. Yeah one grieving, courageous woman is a threat to national security. The real threat is Bush himself and his cronies. Filthy filthy man. I seriously doubt that he's going to get away with this stunt. Even the blind can see how disgusting this is. I think this shows just how scared he is. He preaches life, patriotism and apple pie and motherhood, but he's persecuting one grieving woman with more guts than he has in his little finger. I think this will backfire on him.

268. Why isn't she a threat until Thursday?
If they can seriously consider her a threat to Homeland Security, why does she have to wait until Thursday to be arrested? Logically, is their anyway they can defend that? I know logic and the Bush administration don't go hand and hand, but doesn't this seem to be a huge PR mess waiting to happen? How many more of those can this administration weather?

Also, maybe she has been doing some research and feels the need to take action. Maybe she feels so strongly about the "war" or "struggle" or "unpleasantness" or whatever the fuck the neo-con traitors are calling it now that she is compelled to action.

Activists don't spring fully-formed from the ground. Only Gawd can do that kinda shit.

If you, Gods forbid, agree with anything shrub does once then you've declared him Emperor God forever and must never question his judgement. Kerry died because of a flip flop on the war because when he supported it not all the information was in. His bad. Same case with Cindy Sheehan. What's George's famous quote again? Fool me once shame on you. then babble babble babble...won't get fooled again? No the people won't get fooled again GW and they're waking up by the thousands.

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 08:52 AM by Puglover
You appear to be the only person I've seen on this board to refer to him as "The President."
As to her 1st meeting with "the President" she gives a detailed account of how "the President" was jocular, referring to her as "Mom" and vacuous insofar as any sincerity was concerned. I suggest you read about it and then perhaps you'll see why she desires a real meeting rather than the farce that was conducted at the White House.

edit add last paragraph

where I said that it was a quote from you. My point, if it eluded you was that assertion is a RW talking point. What the woman said after the 1st meeting is irrelevant. ...that nobody's bothered to simply ask her who called her to inform her of this fact. It certainly sounds like a harassment phone call to me. The police don't call you ahead of time to tell you they're going to arrest you. They just... arrest you.

Probably just some stupid freeper who found her phone number, nothing more.
