Protests unlikely to get too close (DU made the Aurora Beacon News!)

Protests unlikely to get too close

OSWEGO TOWNSHIP — While some Fox Valley residents plan to welcome President Bush with open arms, others have words for him not fit for print, and they're planning to demonstrate their opposition.

<snip>

News of Bush's arrival made Web sites from Minneapolis to St. Louis, with open calls for demonstrators to make their way to the Fox Valley.

On www.democraticunderground.com , one man wrote that he has commissioned a batch of "Impeach Bush" signs and balloons.

One man from Port Barrington wrote, "If at all possible I'll be down there with a sign that says 'Parkinson's (disease) sucks, support stem cell research and let me walk in peace.'" His post on the Web site offered to pay for gas in exchange for a ride to the event "because my hands are too screwed up to drive."

Another poster, using the handle Mopinko, wrote, "I plan to be hung over that day, but I can't miss an opportunity like this. Especially since it starts late enough in the day."

1. DU mentioned, but...
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 05:47 PM by mcscajun
That last paragraph certainly doesn't cast DU in a flattering light.
Not too hard to see the editorial slant of the Chicago Beacon News.

Another paper might just have put in the first post and left the other alone.

left out the first one.

but whatever is in the last paragraph leaves the lasting imprint in the reader's mind. That is, when they bother to read past the First paragraph. :)

16. Why can't we copy the thread html pointer line into a private message?
It doesn't work. The program truncates the line so it does not hyperlink...

Mods, please explain this to me.

Thanks.

6. I thought that was hilarious
"Slackers get off their asses to impeach Bush!"

Of course, other people will look at it and think we're all a bunch of pothead hippies. Fuck em. We're taking this country back for the Smith's and the Joneses as well as everybody else. They can just thank us later.

I would write the Chicago Beacon and ask em about this bias, but I'm too lazy (from the pot)

31. How much worse will it be for them
when a bunch of potheads end their little imperialistic fantasy in its tracks? :)

Hey, the day we can't laugh at ourselves is the day we are really screwed. I take activism very seriously, but not so much myself and fellow activists. That's why Mopinko is my hero this week.

15. It's the Aurora Beacon News.
Known locally as the Be Confused. It's been a Repub paper and it's surprising our side even gets a mention. Reporter traced DU from links posted here and posted asking for comments in the Illinois forum. I've had a couple LTTE published but they tend to edit what I consider some of the more important points. Like I wrote though, we're lucky to get a mention.

As a young tyke I remember my dad going on a rant and cancelling our subscription because the Beacon endorsed Nixon for President in 1960. For the rest of his life he bought it at the newsstand to keep up on local events, but he only subscribed to Chicago papers. What a rag.

Edit to add: Oh man. I read the article. Breaks my heart that scumball is going to Cat...one of the shops my dad worked so hard to represent when he was a Machinist union rep. Sigh. Both my folks - Democrats, union people, progressives - passed on before the criminal coup took control, and I often think Well, at least they didn't live to see this.

29. They lost the 'balance' right there...
...the first two quotes could display a balance. First the poster who's up for Impeachment, then the Parkinson's. The third threw the balance out the window, and as the last paragraph, leaves the reader unfamiliar with this site with a negative impression of the folks at DU.
