Lucía Hiriart And Marco Antonio Indicted For Tax Evasion And Fraud

(August 11, 2005) Lucía Hiriart, the wife of former Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet, and his youngest son Marcos Antonio were indicted Wednesday as accomplices to income tax evasion and other charges brought against the former dictator.

Lucía Hiriart was given temporary jail quarters the Military Hospital because of her health, while Marco Antonio Pinochet was placed in Capuchinos, a “high end” luxury jail facility reserved for white collar criminals. Mrs. Pinochet was visited at the hospital by her husband early Wednesday afternoon, and she and her son will both be been granted bail upon payment of US$3,600 each.

The two were charged with participating in the creation of false bank accounts in Chile and in foreign countries, theft and falsification of public documents and passports, and the acquisition of jewels and other luxury items with special “reserve” presidential funds.

Judge Muñoz found that they were “instrumental” in Pinochet’s effort to hide his wealth in foreign bank accounts and shell businesses...
