Oklahoma man held before boarding plane with bomb

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - An Oklahoma man was taken into custody after he tried to carry a bomb on board an airplane on Wednesday in Oklahoma City, an FBI spokesman said.

Charles Alfred Dreyling Jr., 24, was detained on Wednesday morning after a security screener using an X-ray machine saw the device in his luggage as he tried to board a flight to Philadelphia at Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City.

"Although the investigation is in its initial stages we have found no apparent connection to any type of terrorist activity or group," FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said.

Johnson said the screener saw an "improvised explosive device" in Dreyling's carry-on luggage.

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 04:16 AM by truthisfreedom
Charles A Dreyling - (XXX) XXX-4714 - XXXXX LanceXXXXX Cir, XXXXXXXXX XXXX, OK XXXXX

or this one?

Pharmacist (Oncology-related):
Charles Dreyling

from this page:

http://www.accc-cancer.org/members/OK/mem550.html

i'm not suggesting that either one (or perhaps they are the same) is the suspect. i'm just reporting what google has tonight, in case it disappears tomorrow.

it would be exceedingly curious if a pharmacist was trying to make a statement on a plane with a bomb. what might that statement be, kids? any guesses? 8^)

pure speculation, of course, but my mind reels at the possibilities.

Read DU's rules about that. Would be a terrible thing if the person you listed isn't the one being held. But, at any rate, listing this type of info is against DU rules.

7. Sounds like a plain and simple diversion to me...
... oooooooooooooooh, let's print the story about a scary terrorist-type that we CAUGHT instead of paying attention to that bad, mean mom out in the driveway! :sarcasm: I'm thinking it's more like some repub's nephew that they convinced to pull this little stunt.

I just saw Cindy on CBS Up to the Minute around 3:45 this morning. They actually showed quite a few supporters there as well as a clip of her speaking! Yeeeeeeeeeeehaw!

Slowly, but surely, we're chipping away and moving forward!

:woohoo:

12. A diversion!
Who knows what the actual facts are (I certainly don''t) but this is hardly a diversion. We have everyone hyperventilating about foreign terrorists and Al-Quaeda and threats from middle eastern people. And lo and behold - real terror is closer at hand, domestic and home-grown (or might be).

And who exactly sent the anthrax? Where has that investigation led us?

27. To be a real diversion...
...it seems he would have to have been attempting to board a plane full of... uh... blonde cheerleaders. Yeah, blonde cheerleaders, that's it.

On their way to Aruba.

To escape marrying their fiancees.

Either way, I nominate this guy for lame-o of the year, if he truly was carrying a "home-made firecracker" in his carry-on bags (see post downstream a bit). These days, carrying a pair of tweezers is almost enough to qualify you for a strip-search! If it's true, I wonder what rock this guy has been living under for the last five years.

24. Bush admin. made clear that only BROWN people can be terrorists
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 09:37 AM by Julius Civitatus
... or lefties, or environmentalists. White conservatives? They are automatically deemed NOT terrorists by the Bush klan.

Remember that recently the State Department scrubbed from their lists of terrorist groups all those violent militias, para-military right-wing groups, violent anti-abortion groups, and the KKK. All those people are OFFICIALLY no longer considered "terrorists" according to the Bush administration.

In its place, the State Department added environmental organizations as "domestic terrorist groups."

I shit you not!

So let's review what constitutes a "terrorist" according to the Bush clown circus:

- White guy with a bomb in a plane = NOT a terrorist

- Brown guy = terrorist

- White conservative guy bombing abortion clinics = NOT a terrorist

- Eco-friendly tree-hugger = terrorist

- Hooded white klansman engaged on terrorizing non-white population = NOT a terrorist

- Timothy McVeigh = NOT a terrorist

See, they sure have their priorities straight!

14. A little more information
FBI agents have raided the home of a Norman man Wednesday night after authorities found a possible explosive device in one of his bags at Will Rogers World Airport Wednesday morning.

<snip>

Johnson said the suspicious item appeared to be an explosive device. Federal sources said security officials found a CO2 cartridge with a black-powder detonator and a wire in the man's carry-on bag. They're calling it an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Dreyling's carry-on bag was removed and Dreyling was detained until the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force responded to the scene.

Dreyling's father said that he believes the device was a homemade firecracker made during a recent family vacation.

15. If this was just a "mistake" ... all I can say is, what an idiot.
One would have to have almost lived under a rock not to realize that airports take security more serious today than they did four years ago. THat if folks can't take cigarette lighters onto a plane, that perhaps homemade firecrackers (if that is the case) would also be of concern.

If this isn't the case, and something more was going on, it is no surprise that the FBI would declare no ties to terrorism .... remember earlier this year a released list of "domestic terrorist groups" included leftwing radical eco groups - but didn't mention any rightwing radical groups (think racist, think militia, think "Army of God", etc.) Not suggesting in anyway that this kid is tied to any of those groups - just reminding folks that our government doesn't classify any of those groups as potentially violent groups.

32. Former Mayor Vouches For OKC Airport Bombing Suspect ("fine young man")
And a repuke politican is trying to vouch for the guy in order to get charges dropped...if only people in Gitmo were allowed to have that done.

http://www.kotv.com/main/home/stories.asp?whichpage=1&id=88298

A former Oklahoma City mayor says a man arrested for carrying an explosive device in an airline carry-on bag is a "fine young man and no terrorist."

Charles Dreyling was taken into custody yesterday at the Will Rogers World Airport security checkpoint.

Ex-Mayor Kirk Humphreys, who also is Dreyling's landlord, says Dreyling created what he called a "glorified firecracker" and forgot it was in his luggage. No details have been provided as to why or how Dreyling created the device.

An assistant US attorney describes the device as a carbon-dioxide cartridge with a black-power detonator.
