Mother calls protest disgrace
Local parent says California woman dishonors son's memory

The near loss of her son in Iraq hasn't swayed Leisa Fudge's support of the war there.

Her sympathy for a woman whose son died in battle doesn't change her disgust over war protests near President Bush's Texas ranch.

....

The protest shows a lack of respect, Fudge said.
"I think she's doing such a disgrace to her son's memory," Fudge said.

....

Bublis, a 24-year-old Archer City High School graduate, graduated from West Point in 2003. He entered the Army and was assigned to Iraq with the 25th Infantry Division Stryker Brigade.Bublis was serving in Mosul, Iraq, when an explosive hit the Stryker military vehicle he was in April 23. Bublis' injuries included two skull fractures - at one point requiring that doctors cut into his skull to relieve pressure - and third-degree burns to 26 percent of his body. That included burns to his nose, back, arms, legs and lungs.

1. Some people never learn...
This woman is clearly a clueless bot. She is the one dishonoring her own son - for continuing to support a war that disfigured and nearly killed him.

5. She's in denial.
A lot of these people just have too much invested in the myth and mythos surrounding BUsh and his war.

I fear the reactions from the right are going to get much worse as time goes by. They will struggle harder and harder against the truth up until the bitter end.

I guess it's hard to stomach the fact that our men and women are dying because of Bush's lies - dying in vain. To accept that is just too much to bear for many.

38. And my hope is when that end comes
it will bury the Neo-cons and the repugs for the next 50 years. The problem is like the cornered rats they are they will most likely try to bring the house down with them. If anything leads to the destruction of the US it could very well be the republician party and the neo-con/christian right that has taken over.

77. Like Nixon's "silent majority" only these assholes will not shut up!!
There came a day when Tricky Dick lost the Nebraska farmer with his crewcut, the farmer's wife in her bun and apron, the rural folk who flew a flag outside their house, properly lighted in accordance with Flag Etiquette; when he lost the well-heeled businessman and sprayhaired woman who lunches ... and no one thought it could happen...until it DID. It sure took awhile, though, but when it finally tipped, it tipped over like a fat drunk passing out on a very high barstool.

I think it will take time, but I think the worm is turning. I would love to see more Gold Star Mothers front and center...we know Lila, we know Cindy--we need to know more of them, and hear from them. We need to put persistent faces to this anguish, that people cannot turn away from.

81. No, they just "stonewalled"
...and they focused, incessantly, on <<<LAW AND ORDER>>> (code for: round up those Negroes!!!). They constantly complained that the sky was falling, and it was all about CRIME on the domestic front.

Everyone was mean and surly back then, all the days were gray or putrid...kinda like nowadays, come to think about it.

The only terra we saw was 'over there'--the 72 Olympics comes to mind. And London was getting it from the IRA as well, and there were kidnappings in Europe, and one had to be careful when travelling abroad.

We patted ourselves on the back and said, well, we may be getting our houses burgled and cars stolen, unemployment may be through the roof, inflation may be getting worse by the day, but hey, NO TERRA!!! That's for THOSE guys, not us!!!

Funny, back then we had a functioning press...at least you could turn on the TV and see them TRYING. I think at long last some of the press toadies are waking up, but they sure are coming out of dreamland a little too slow for my liking....

But until she has actually lost her son for a lie, and then realized that it IS a lie, she really has no standing here to criticize Cindy Sheehan.

Right now all she has is an opinion. And you know what an opinion is like...`

on those who don't share it. I can fully understand how somebody could have a kid hurt in a war and still support it. What I think is wrong is when that person attacks somebody who has the same experience but the opposite opinion.

Like the counter protesters in TX. Why did they feel they needed to shout at th anti war protestors. Was being for the war not enough? That they had to try to attack the opposition??

52. Your right on nolabels,
there are plenty of people out there who do not want to admit they were so naive to believe him. Most of them think they are smart and too well educated to be taken in. It's like trying to argue with someone and you have the facts and can prove what you're saying, yet the other person will keep arguing, knowing full well they are wrong. Till they admit they were wrong, you can argue till the cows come home and it won't do any good. It is going to have to hit them smack in face before they will admit it.

The problem is with * pushing for Iran, that may be sooner than later. The point is when you are beginning to dig a hole, stop digging.

67. Iran will never happen
No one will go along including the military. If you think they dragged their heels getting into Iraq. Iran would be an even stupider move than Hitler moving on Russia. Then or course lets think how stupid they have already been

Pakistan is tenuous, Uzbekistan? Afghanistan next door, Iraq already out of control, Syria and all the others with populations not liking the western culture or economics shoved down their throats would make hell of coalition wanting to put Uncle Sam back on his own shores. Yea like what is a foolish bushwhack going to do nuke em all. It will never happen, they cant even cut the mustard with Iraq.

I like to remember this whole charade is just one charade on top of another charade. 9/11 was the beginning of the end for all of them.

Some of us might of been questioning long before 9/11 but since then our numbers have been growing not shrinking. They have not been able to stem the tide and it wont be long before our majority will be an uncontrollable majority that demands answers.

Bush slaps down top general after he calls for troops to be pulled out of Iraq
By Philip Sherwell in Washington
(Filed: 14/08/2005)

The top American commander in Iraq has been privately rebuked by the Bush administration for openly discussing plans to reduce troop levels there next year, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.

President George W Bush personally intervened last week to play down as "speculation" all talk of troop pull-outs because he fears that even discussing options for an "exit strategy" implies weakening resolve.

General George Casey

Gen George Casey, the US ground commander in Iraq, was given his dressing-down after he briefed that troop levels - now 138,000 - could be reduced by 30,000 in the early months of next year as Iraqi security forces take on a greater role.

The unusual sign of US discord came as Iraqi politicians and clerics drafting a new constitution continued their own wrangling over autonomy demands by various factions

Wounded Soldier Refuses to Meet Bush
by RandyMI
Wed Aug 10th, 2005 at 10:49:02 PDT

But, unlike a lot of people, period, he said no to meeting anyone in the Bush Administration.

"He got visits from celebrities, too. Generals came by to shake his hand and ask how he was doing. The Dave Matthews Band visited, as did players from the Washington Nationals and Colorado Rockies.

"I didn't catch their names," he says. "I was kind of high on morphine at the time. And you can't read their autographs."

One day a nurse came in to ask Rodgers if he wanted to meet President Bush, who was visiting the hospital. Rodgers declined.

I don't want anything to do with him," he explains. "My belief is that his ego is getting people killed and mutilated for no reason -- just his ego and his reputation. If we really wanted to, we could pull out of Iraq. Maybe not completely but enough that we wouldn't be losing people -- at least not at this rate. So I think he himself is responsible for quite a few American deaths."

Sorry about your son, lady, but you just don't get it.

A boneheaded, illegal, immoral, unwise war based on misinformation, disinformation, demonization, manipulation.

My mother used to get upset back in the mid- to late 60s at protestors on the news while my father was in Vietnam. Now she hates Bush and hates to see the whole disgusting waste of life over the manipulations of war profiteers. She figured it out. Maybe someday you will, too.

45. I agree.
I remember reading a message board at one point, and the basic thrust of the messages from some of the military families was, "We need to continue in Iraq so my husband/wife/son/daughter/father/mother didn't die in vain."

My thought at the time (and now): I'm sorry for your loss, but he/she sure DID die in vain, no matter what happens in Iraq in the future.

What saddens me is that people think it's okay for others to die for no good reason.

My sister's son is being deployed to Iraq next month, and she is emailing to our family weblinks to "happy" Iraq pictures of troops- saying that it's not as bad as the MSM is reporting.

My choice is to collude in her denial and support her (and hope that she will ultimately find the truth on her own), or try to blast through her denial and fight her. With the second option, I know I will lose our relationship. Compassion seems the best choice in this case, and I will be there for my sister if something happens to her son.

25. that woman is just like John Brown's mamma.
John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore.
His mama sure was proud of him!
He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all.
His mama's face broke out all in a grin.

"Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine,
You make me proud to know you hold a gun.
Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get,
And we'll put them on the wall when you come home."

As that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout,
Tellin' ev'ryone in the neighborhood:
"That's my son that's about to go, he's a soldier now, you know."
She made well sure her neighbors understood.

She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile
As she showed them to the people from next door.
And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun,
And these things you called a good old-fashioned war.

Oh! Good old-fashioned war!

Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not come.
They ceased to come for about ten months or more.
Then a letter finally came saying, "Go down and meet the train.
Your son's a-coming home from the war."

She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around
But she could not see her soldier son in sight.
But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last,
When she did she could hardly believe her eyes.

Oh his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off
And he wore a metal brace around his waist.
He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know,
While she couldn't even recognize his face!

Oh! Lord! Not even recognize his face.

"Oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done.
How is it you come to be this way?"
He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move
And the mother had to turn her face away.

"Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war
You thought it was the best thing I could do?
I was on the battleground, you were home . . . acting proud.
You wasn't there standing in my shoes."

"Oh, and I thought when I was there, God, what am I doing here?
I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin'.
But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close
And I saw that his face looked just like mine."

Oh! Lord! Just like mine!

"And I couldn't help but think, through the thunder rolling and stink,
That I was just a puppet in a play.
And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke,
And a cannon ball blew my eyes away."

As he turned away to walk, his Ma was still in shock
At seein' the metal brace that helped him stand.
But as he turned to go, he called his mother close
And he dropped his medals down into her hand.

27. How is what Cindy is doing a "disgrace" to her son?
This has become the right's talking point lately: she "dishonors" her son; what she's doing is a "disgrace" to her son.

How, exactly? More people than ever before are aware of her son's death. Is that dishonoring him?

Cindy wants the troops pulled out now. It that "disgracing" the memory of her son?

She opposes Bush. That's the "dishonor" and "disgrace" to these pathetic sycophantic robots.

29. how hard it must be for some of these people
who are so married to their president, so married to their party, that their lives would be so completely shattered--that their sense of duty to country would be so utterly destroyed if they just faced the facts that 1. we were lied to and 2. this didn't have to happen.

if they--for a moment--faced the fact that none of this had to happen, that their husbands/wives, sons/daughters, mothers/fathers did not have to get maimed, burned, killed it might destroy them; they can't cope with it.

the reality is too dark--they mentally can't go there.

i believe some of these people are in denial as a coping mechanism; they comfort themselves by believing there is a justification for what has happened.

some people have to believe the concept of "there's a reason for everything" or "everything happens for a reason" or "things happen for the best" (as if there is some higher power rational to it--it's magical thinking).

i used to believe crap like that until my best friend was murdered. granted, it would have been more comforting to think that there was a "reason" or "purpose" for her death but instead i took the less comforting route.

after she was killed i just believed that sometimes really horrible things happen for no fucking reason--and sometimes there is no justification for bad things happening.

these other people who have not lost someone they love, have not had someone suffer at the hands of this gop are simply ignorant as hell when they go and make a spectacle of themselves in order to protest against someone like cindy sheehan.

30. This is the best the Karl Rove can muster???
The outrage of a woman who "nearly lost" her son?

Please.....

And organizing a bunch of dumbasses to echo the ACTUAL feelings of an administration without compassion?

"We don't care, we don't care, we don't care..."

Word to Karl and gang--we KNOW you don't care. Deal with our outrage over that fact, you fricking losers.

33. How many of these are they going to trot out to smear Cindy?
I mean.. everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm sorry that this woman's son was injured. I'm also sorry that she's completely unable to discern what the protest is about... perhaps the quality of education where she grew up wasn't up to snuff. It's blatantly obvious why Cindy and others are in Crawford. This woman can say all she wants about her own son, but she is treading sacred ground by presenting herself as a moral authority over Casey Sheehan's memory. She is a stranger to that family and knows NOTHING about what is meaningful to them. Shame on her. She needs to tend to her own family.

34. Eh, whatever
She's entitled to her opinion, and she's certainly paying the consequences for it too.

I could use this post to say "I told you so", but I won't do that.

37. The truth sometimes hurts like hell....
.......and sometimes to recognize the truth you have to accept your own guilt in the complicity of it. If she hadn't supported the war like such a damned dumb blind fool her son may of never been injured.

Each and everyone that ever supported this stupid war in their ignorance bears responsibility for it. They will have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

50. The crucial question of WHY this woman supports the Iraq War
is not mentioned in this article. I really want to know why Ms.Fudge feels this war is necessary, why she backs it "100 percent".

Also, her son, being a West Pointer, is in quite a different position than was PFC Casey Sheehan; parents of the military academy elite I expect would be less likely to have their starry-eyed view of the President and this particular military effort dimmed than would the parents of less-celebrated, ordinary grunts.

59. I think Mrs. Fudge is pro war not pro troop
There is a big difference. Mrs. Sheehan is pro troop, she is supporting them, trying to get something done for them back home. Mrs. Fudge is pro war and does not care about the troops. She apparently only wants death and destruction. I wonder if Mrs. Fudge realizes she is pro war and not pro troop.

51. She supports murdering little Iraqi kids. I'm so proud of her. NOT.
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 10:15 AM by Gregorian
I forgot- she can't bother her "beautiful mind" with images of the truth. Can't think about the results of what her son and the other troops are doing, due to the administrations lies and filthy ambition.

I should post a stream of pictures of homeless, parentless, Iraqi children who are severely injured. But I can't even look, it's so sad for me.

You see, the problem with republicans is they can't be responsible for anything. The drive without a rear view mirror. They live without empathy. Their brains can't wrap around hypothetical thoughts. They just do what they want. And they can't be arsed to look any further, to find the truth.

edit- I'm guilty. I just assume she's a repub. But it's a very good assumption.

Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 09:51 AM by Solly Mack
I can't imagine how that woman's opinion matters in the least.

And the ONLY people insulting the memory of Casey Sheehan are those who presume to know him in death. Who think they know what would have bothered him, insulted him...you don't know Casey Sheehan...just because he was a soldier doesn't mean you know him. Just because he was one of "the troops" doesn't mean you know him. Stop fucking pretending you do.

Cindy Sheehan carries the memory of her son within her...and no one else gets to have a say in that memory.... NO ONE.

56. Interesting statement by her (Fudge) in April
A quick Google of her full name brings up an old (No longer avail via website) cached version of some past news...

http://64.233.179.104/search?q=cache:xr8rsM8r7PwJ:www.notinourname.net/gi-special/3/b12.pdf+Leisa+Fudge&hl=en

About one-third of the way down the page (Control-F, search for fudge) will yield an article about her and her son. Halfway through her statement:

When he was growing up, Bublis wanted to design airplanes. When he was looking for colleges, his
stepdad hoped to convince the University of Texas-enthusiast to attend his alma mater at Texas A&M
University. But one day, Bublis came up with an entirely different option. He said 'I want to go to West Point,'Fudge said.

I was going to be supportive no matter what.

I wonder what that means?

It's almost always easier to sleep if you think your kids are safer, the future's going to be better somehow, and that your son was wounded for a good reason.

She has every right to believe what she wants. I just hope that she would think first before attacking a Gold Star Mom next time. She's a Silver Star Mom, and that's more than enough of a sacrifice, but she should be respectful of Cindy's grief and loss. How would she like to be attacked for her opinion?

62. She is showing disrespect for her son by supporting Bush's lies
If anyone caused one of my children to go through all the pain and
suffering this young man has, there's no way I could support him or anything else he has done. When something is borne out of lies as this bloody damned war was, people need to wake up and quit praising the actions of a power hungry maniac. He's nothing great, so why should he be shown any respect. He certainly isn't showing any respect to the troops or anyone who happens to cross him.

78. Eh, I think she is showing her profound IGNORANCE and intolerance
The fool does not understand that she was lied to, she will not believe it. The huge irony will come when her kid tells her he thinks it was all bullshit, and he is angry that he is screwed up for a lie. Maybe then she'll rent some of those good ole Viet Nam movies like COMING HOME and watch them with her kid, and realize that history is repeating itself.

But hey, her name is FUDGE, so we need to cut her some slack. She probably lives in a hollow tree with a bunch of Keebler elves, and doesn't watch tv or get a paper regularly.
