Catholic watchdog group urges purging of 'pro-death' professors
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/08/16/catholic_watchdog_group_urges_purging_of_pro_death_professors/

A conservative Catholic watchdog group wants 18 academics, including three professors at Boston College, purged from campus for perpetuating "a culture of death" by supporting abortion rights or siding against Terry Schiavo's parents in their efforts to keep her feeding tube.

The Cardinal Newman Society also says in a fund-raising appeal that administrators at BC, Georgetown University and elsewhere should be warned their school risks being "stripped of its Catholic identity by the bishop who has authority over that college."

The eight-page letter, written by Eugene Diamond, former president of the Catholic Medical Association, was sent to 75,000 people in two mailings split between April and last month.

"It is for us to raise our voice in defense of the truth and demand that authentic Catholic doctrine be brought back to our beloved universities and colleges," Diamond wrote. "And the most natural first response to such dishonesty and underhandedness is anger!"

6. Yes, you silly Canadian...
I thought it might be about the death penalty, too. This only shows that I need to move to Canada right away. Please. Get me away from fundies, of whichever faith, whichever god, whichever religion, they profess to believe in.

I suppose I'm asking too much, for some sanity to be restored to this world. Between our government here, and religious fundamentalists, this is not a good world to live in anymore.

3. More:
"Boston College issued a statement declaring it is "firmly committed to its Jesuit, Catholic mission and heritage" and "openly engages issues of the day, especially those concerning faith and culture." It added: "The publicity-seeking rhetoric and unfounded accusations of the Cardinal Newman Society are a disservice to Catholic colleges and universities and the church that they proudly serve."

In an interview, Paris dismissed the society as "a self-appointed vigilante committee." He also labeled its planned appeal to the bishops as baseless, since the schools are run independently from the Catholic church.

"They neither represent the church nor the academic community," Paris said of the society's leaders, "and yet they want to censor the academic community in the name of the church."

I didn't know that! I looked up a list of Catholic colleges, and I sure didn't see Boston or Georgetown there!

23. yes they are
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 01:30 AM by Rich Hunt
I dunno...maybe they are picking on them because they are too liberal and don't keep their mouths shut? Why don't they just be quiet and leave and join a 'respectable' church? That's not unfamiliar, especially to those who keep mighty close tabs on these things.

Interesting timing for this story, I must say - after sitting in a ballpark all night. Guess there was a little "conference" eh? Where'd they get the information? It was in a locked apartment.

I guess lots of people are tracking some people's whereabouts. If I were them, I wouldn't be so indiscreet about it.

28. In Georgetown's case
The school -- run by the Jesuits -- has been more focused on maintaining its reputation as a top university than following Catholic doctrine, allowing speakers to address abortion, student organizations for several different faiths, actual scientific research, etc.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can get the Pill in the student health office or that you could get a hysterectomy if you were bleeding to death in the emergency room. (Actually, that's a maybe on the second one: GU Hospital is no longer owned by the university.)

every time i see an article like this i really want to level the place. Fortunately I have parents that taught me violence is wrong and that I found a home in the episcopal church. If they dont want me it's okay seems to me it's people like this that choose to free barbabus (sp) when they could have set free christ.
