DeLay presence shouldn't hurt Rep. Wilson
LEE BANDY

Interested in a round of golf with ethically challenged U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay? Plop down $2,000 for U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson's re-election campaign and you're all set.

The occasion is Wilson's third annual Hilton Head Golf Outing on Friday and Saturday. DeLay, the second-ranking Republican in the House, is the special guest.

The event is attracting more media attention than usual because the Texas congressman is in serious danger of being declared in violation of House ethics rules.

Not surprisingly, the Democrats have attempted to make political hay of the fundraiser by questioning Wilson's wisdom in inviting the Republican leader.

1. Wilson invites DeLay as guest
Wilson invites DeLay as guest

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson is holding a campaign fundraiser Friday on Hilton Head Island that features House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, the embattled Texas Republican who has been investigated and criticized for several charges of ethics violations.
But despite the negative publicity that has surrounded DeLay for the past year, Wilson said Tuesday that he thought DeLay's presence at his event, a golf tournament, will be a lightning rod for support, not criticism.

For Wilson, a congressman who has served the Lowcountry area, including Beaufort County, since 2001, this will be his third golf fundraiser on the island and the second featuring DeLay. The first year's guest was Rep. Ernie Istook, R-Oklahoma.

Wilson said DeLay asked to be invited back to this year's event. There was no discussion about replacing him with another guest due to the controversy.

"I was more determined than ever," Wilson said. "I want people to get to know who he is. I'm confident the charges against him are fabricated, exaggerated. I know Tom DeLay is a person of integrity. He has epitomized to me what a public official could be."

3. DeLay presence shouldn't hurt Rep. Wilson....
but it will.

In the next few weeks you will see more stories(I hope but knowing the US media..)about Mr Abramoff "singing" and I think we all have a good idea who's name will come up in his "songs"...Mr Delay...and a handful of others I'm sure.

Mr Delay has been linked to more corruption them most MOB bosses..a smart boss keeps his hands clean and never EVER breaks the law out in the open..yes, some are a little less "covert" about there dealings and their contempt for the law but by and large there smart enough to avoid trouble...till there nailed for the big stuff anyway

Delay on the other hand is above the law...for now anyway. The Republicans will not be in control forever..lets us just hope so.
