Claim filed on (Rep. Duke) Cunningham house
U.S. lawsuit seeks forfeiture of property
By Dani Dodge
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 18, 2005

The U.S. Attorney's Office has filed a secret lawsuit against Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham that contends he should forfeit his Rancho Santa Fe home to the government because it was purchased with illegally obtained money.

Notice of the lawsuit and the government's interest in the property was filed with the San Diego County Recorder's Office.

Cunningham's attorney, Lee Blalack, declined to comment yesterday on the lawsuit but said he had filed a motion challenging the U.S. government's legal claim on the house.

The home – a five-bedroom, eight-bath Spanish colonial estate on Via Del Charro – was listed for sale yesterday for $3.5 million. However, the U.S. attorney's declaration that it has a claim on the property makes a sale difficult if not impossible for the time being, local real estate agents said.

2. US prosecutors claim home of CA lawmaker (Cunningham)
By Marty Graham Thu Aug 18, 6:54 PM ET

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - The U.S. Attorney's Office has initiated attempts to seize the home of U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, alleging that the California Republican's $3.5 million estate was purchased with bribe money, court records show.

Cunningham, 63, an eight-term congressman, has been under investigation by federal prosecutors, the Internal Revenue Service and the criminal investigative arm of the Pentagon over his ties to a defense contractor who purchased another home of his in late 2003, then sold it for a loss.

The sealed court documents, filed on July 21 and first reported by the San Diego Union Tribune, give notice of a civil lawsuit seeking title to the Rancho Santa Fe, California, property, owned by Cunningham and his wife, Nancy.

The court filing, which was made a week after Cunningham announced he would not seek re-election in 2006, said that the congressman's house "constitutes or is derived from proceeds traceable to a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 201."

Am I the only DUer who thinks we need a separate forum for Republican scandals?

10. One forum with color-coded scandals
in honor of what's his name with the color-coded terror alerts.

I honestly think your idea is a good one and would be very beneficial to researchers and voters.

9. I second the idea of a "republican scandal watch" forum/group for
us here at DU. It is rather hard to keep track of all the rampant scandalous, treasonous, poisonous activities of the Repukes.

Anyone else???

3. Cunningham is a scum bag. Elated to see that asshole out of govt.

Hopefully he'll get jail time. He bought his eight bathroom house and yacht peddling his influence and off the taxpayer dole. He is the quintessential congressional parasite.

Good riddance. His staff is on the take, too.

5. Will this be enough to disgust
the voters to cast their ballot for the Dem in the next election? Or will they just pick another Repug who isn't under investigation.

8. This area is GOP extreme...very ignorant and greedy. They will vote in
another Republican. They vote for anyone with an R....doesn't matter how big a criminal. Hell, they'd vote Cunningham back in if he ran. They also have a lot of voter fraud.
