LA Daily News: (LA) Rent control up for study
Rent control up for study

Tenants in 602,000 apartments could face increases
Rick Orlov, Staff Writer
LA Daily News

As housing costs continue to soar, the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday authorized a study of its rent-control program in a move that could allow landlords to pass along more of their costs to tenants.

"We have not had a study of rent control since 1994, and we need to ... have as extensive a study as possible of how it's working today," Councilman Bernard Parks said.

The city's rent-control program was adopted in 1978 when apartment owners began to increase rents after the passage of Proposition 13. Under the program, which has withstood numerous court challenges, landlords are allowed to raise rents a nominal amount each year to reflect inflation and take the rents to market rates when an apartment is vacated.

1. Wow, Bernard Parks, "man of the people" ????
Why would he even propose such a study? In this economy, those who own property are doing MUCH better than those who don't. (Renters don't get all those tax breaks that landlords do .. ) I don't think this is the time to make renters' lives even harder ...

3. I'm just surprised this is coming from Parks
I'm here in L.A. and I've always seen him as a Democrat (and the kind who'd stand up for workers/renters' rights before those of property/business owners). Maybe he's gone over to the "Dark Side." (Yeah, yeah, I know that's a bad joke.)

4. Write your pols and let them know...
you will fight losing rent control with every means possible, especially with your vote. This is a very Repuke type of move, catering to landlords, hoping for favors from the wealthy. Start fighting this now, start with a grassroots effort. Before it's too late.

5. ending all LL power would garner many votes
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 06:51 PM by oscar111
i had a horrible LL some years back. No board screens them for kindness. Any cretin can be a LL.

1. Nationalize all LL apts via eminent domain. Pay a fair price for it.

2 transfer title to the apts to the occupants, overnight.

A huge drain on the peace of mind of millions will suddenly end. Upping their productivity and the GDP. My old LL was a huge drain on my peace of mind.

rent control is weak compared to what is needed. Ending LL power would gather many dem votes.

LL's are house dictators. Plain and simple.
House dictators are anti-freedom. Dictators are also anti-democracy.
Landlording doesnt belong in america.
