DHAKA, AUGUST 19: Leading newspapers here on Friday called on the government to admit to the Muslim majority country’s rising Islamic militancy, after a series of bombings killed two people and wounded over 100 others.

Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia cut short a visit to China after Wednesday’s blasts, which are blamed on the banned Islamic group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen after leaflets promoting the group’s cause were found at the bombing sites.

‘‘The serial bomb blasts need to be recognised as a warning shot across the bows of the nation,’’ wrote Dhaka’s leading English newspaper the Daily Star. ‘‘Let us never again hear anyone say that religious extremists are not active in the country or that they are not a serious threat.’’

Other papers blamed the government for being unprepared. Daily Prothom Alo said, ‘‘Such attacks need long planning and training. But that the country’s intelligence and law enforcing agencies knew nothing is surprising.’’
