Bush promotes Iraq war policy to vets

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY — President Bush defended the war in Iraq on Monday in the face of growing skepticism, asserting that “a policy of retreat and isolation will not bring us safety” from terrorism.

With U.S. casualties rising and his approval rating falling, Bush urged Americans to stand united in the war in Iraq and against terrorists everywhere.

While the United States has not been attacked since Sept. 11, 2001, Bush said, “We're not yet safe. Terrorists in foreign lands still hope to attack our country. We must confront threats before they fully materialize.”

“The only way to defend to our citizens where we live is to go after the terrorists where they live,” Bush said in a speech to the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

42. Can you believe how he talks?
It's like he's addressing a small group of toddlers at a pre-school.

Stands at the front, looks at his little group, trying to keep their attention.

"Now look here kiddies, I'm telling you there is a boogey man. Just don't go out after dark. And don't look under your bed, because there might be a monster under there".

See - I saw one once. yessirree, he was a big, scary monster. Hiding in my closet. Looks dramatic, has big scary eyes.

"Watch out!"

Bush Urges America to Stay Course in Iraq

By NEDRA PICKLER
The Associated Press
Monday, August 22, 2005; 12:32 PM

SALT LAKE CITY -- After more than a week out of the public eye, President Bush left the seclusion of his Texas ranch Monday to remind Americans why he thinks they must not give up on peace and stability in Iraq.

Bush chose the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Republican-friendly Utah as the site for the first of two speeches this week, both to reaffirm his plan to stay the course despite the recent focus on problems in Iraq. The second comes Wednesday to a National Guard group in Idaho.

Bush has not left his ranch since Aug. 13. Meanwhile, anti-war protesters camped nearby took the limelight, complete with a Sunday evening concert by folk singer Joan Baez.

Also, a leading Republican senator and prospective presidential candidate _ Nebraska's Chuck Hagel _ said the war in Iraq has destabilized the Middle East and is looking more like the Vietnam conflict in which he fought a generation ago.

<<<< "The only way to defend to our citizens where we live is to go after the terrorists where they live,” Bush said in a speech to the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars." >>>>

Yet another perfect example of pnac's promotion of bigotry to justify their policy of perpetual war for profit. A country without their own resident terrorists is pure fantasy.

Terrorists are criminals. We have our own share of home grown terrorists (rudolph, mcveigh, skinheads). Catch them, put them behind bars and move on.

At one time, I rejected the notion that Americans were being dumbed down. Not anymore. They've been dumbed down effectively enough to buy this load of garbage * is spouting. And no one in the msm is even calling foul on *'s inflammatory bigoted rhetoric.

28. I cancelled my membership for the VFW...
They are supposed to advocate for Veterans. In their magazine they never call out the Bush admin & other repukes for their VA benefit cuts. They keep inviting him to speak despite his lack of credibility or care for vets.

I expect the VFW to be non-partisan. I would have no problem with them endorsing Rep Chris Smith (R-NJ), despite his other flaws he is a friend to vets. That is why he was removed by Tom Delay from the chairmanship of the Vet's Committee. Despite this, the VFW doesn't mobilize their members to protest.

They are useless.

35. Senators Harry Reid and Russell Feingold criticized the speech.
Mr. Bush's speech drew quick criticism from Democrats.

"Once again, the president missed an opportunity to level with the American people," said Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, the minority leader, who said the administration was "rudderless and adrift" in Iraq.

Senator Russell D. Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, said: "The president failed to give the American people a realistic assessment of where we stand today, and where we should be going. It was more of the same sloganeering that has not made us stronger or safer in the global fight against terrorism."
