House GOP leaders backed Able Danger plan
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 04:34 PM by maxrandb
On edit: Isn't UPI a little to the right of Faux?? Why would they put something out that appears damaging to the repukes and their boy?

http://www.wpherald.com/storyview.php?StoryID=20050822-011832-6872r

Isn't this interesting? Looks like the guy who's been breathlessly telling every reich-wing talking head (yes that means you Sean and Rush) that 9/11 was all Clinton's fault, and how we had Atta and the entire cell all ready to be taken down if it weren't for that "pesky" wall (all of which is pretty much proven false now), meeting with senior GOP legislatures BEFORE he decided to go public. Wonder why he felt that he needed to get approval from the Republicans before coming out? Wonder what they talked about? Wonder why they decided that partisanship trumps national security?

From the story:
"WASHINGTON -- House Republican leaders approved in advance plans by a military intelligence official to go public with details of a top-secret Pentagon project code-named Able Danger.

Army reserve Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer says the data-mining project identified Mohammed Atta and three other of the Sept. 11 hijackers as members of an al-Qaida cell more than a year before the attacks.

"I spoke personally to Denny Hastert and to Pete Hoekstra," Shaffer told United Press International. Rep. Hastert, R-Ill., is speaker of the House, and Rep. Hoekstra, R-Mich., is chairman of that chamber's intelligence committee.

Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean told UPI in an e-mail message Sunday that he had no information about the meeting and had no comment to make. Hoekstra was said by staff to be out of the country."

------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, hold onto your butts for this paragraph from the article:

Shaffer says that he himself did not remember the names of Atta and the others immediately after the Sept. 11 attack, until a colleague showed him one of the charts the team had produced in mid-2000. "I asked her what she was going to do," he recalled, "and she said 'I don't know.'" Shaffer said she later told him that she had gone with Weldon to the White House, where the congressman gave the chart to deputy national security advisor Steven Hadley.

The White House said it had no comment.

:wtf:

Steven Hadley has had info on Atta for this long and never made it public??? Don't think they're trying to cover something up, do you?

24. Moon owns UPI...maybe losing BIG in the 2006 and (gasp!) 2008
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 08:08 PM by EVDebs
elections is sinking in :

"...UPI, a 93-year-old agency, has been a financially troubled operation for the better part of the past three decades, with multiple ownership changes during the past 18 years. The serial owners have included Mexican publisher Mario Vazquez Rana and a U.S. partner, Texan Joe Russo, and Infotechnology Inc., which is owned by Earl W. Brian, a California venture capitalist. Most recently a group of Saudi Arabian industrialists presided over the company. When the sale to Moon was announced, veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas, UPI's most revered and honored employee, handed in her resignation rather than pick up her paycheck from Moon."

http://www.mediachannel.org/originals/upi-moon.shtml

Or maybe those former Saudi owners still have clout with Moon and the CIA afterall...?

You can't very well cover up the obvious: Bush & Co. have created another Islamic Republic in the Middle East, Iraq. The others already there are Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The sheer STUPIDITY of the Neocons only goes to validate Bush's legacy in history as Worst President, Ever.

4. Yes it is UPI
and my thoughts were, shit, "if UPI is reporting possibly damaging stuff, the repukes are in trouble".

Or it could just be a mole at UPI that took the story to the editor, and said, "here's a good story blaming Clinton", and the editor simply said "run with it"

I think it's more damaging to the repukes than it is to Dems. Now, no matter where this Schaeffer guy goes, all you need to say is; "the guy who met privately with Republican leaders before telling his story..."

That is way oversimplified. Can anyone do better?

16. Lawyers for "Special Ops Command" ordered hands-off -- what's that?
From the article:

"The (Able Danger) team came up with information that these four bad guys were in the United States," he said, adding that for this reason, the intelligence was considered to be significant.

But Shaffer says lawyers from Special Operations Command would not allow the military to develop intelligence operations targeting them, because they were legally in the country.

the story. Not sure where they are going with it.

The 9/11 Commission has overlooked many important pieces of this investigation and if this is an attempt at quick, relatively painless solutions to a million unanswered questions...don't buy it.

I have a feeling this won't lead to LIHOP or MIHOP, but rather...once again....to incompetence with perhaps one or two heads to roll this time. Surely they realize that a sacrificial pig and a believable scenario is in order if this story is ever going to die down.

Is this new witness just another Gannon? The thing about Rove is, he only has a few tricks, and he does them over and over and over. He plants false evidence, he plants false witnesses, he plants fake news stories and rumors. He's just a dirty, dirty trickster.

So Rove is pulling out the Clenis, there must be a REALLY big problem coming at them regarding 9/11. Is it coming out of Fitzgerald's investigation? Or what?

I've read some right wing comments on other boards and it appears that they are of the belief that this will all easily be laid at Clinton's feet. They think it might even help them in the upcoming cycles.

It's going to be interesting but my gut tells me that the party of the lowest common denominator (the right) will come through this smelling like a rose when all is said and done.

33. I Disagree
I think Americans are suffering from "Blame Cenis Syndrome".

It's like the kid who keeps coming up with different reasons for not doing his homework.

Clinton's been out of office for 5 years now. He was not the President on 9/11, he was not still on the distribution lists for Presidential Daily Briefings on 6 August 2001.

They'll try to blame Clinton, but I think most Americans are smart enough to figure out that the "dog didn't eat the Presidents homework".

Has always been to make a controversial issue as complicated as possible to confuse the public until they're ready to jump at the simplest explanation which, in this case, could be the Clenis red herring or scapegoating Hastert or both.

The problem is compounded by Dem leadership's continued inability to frame these issues or even address them.

42. Off the books funding of operations without Congressional knowledge or
approval; then using part of the proceeds to fund politicians. Hmmm. Sounds like what Renata Adler's Dec 1976 article in Atlantic Magazine titled In Search of the Real Nixon Scandal was all about.

Watergate would have exposed it, and even the JFK assassination if that would have allowed research into the Italian connections of Clay Shaw.

Alfred McCoy's The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade years ago explored some of this.

Think back into the Koreagate Scandal just after Watergate also...
