RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL

Sparks has become the second and largest Nevada city to support a nationwide effort opposing the USA Patriot Act, which grants broad -- and some say unconstitutional -- powers to law enforcement in fighting the war on terrorism.

In a 3-0 vote, the Sparks City Council endorsed a resolution from the Nevada Campaign to Defeat the Patriot Act which denounces sections of the federal law. The group says the act allows unlawful search and seizure, racial profiling, and illegal access to medical, financial and library lending records.

... After listening to dozens of speakers, some quoting the country’s founding fathers and making parallels to George Orwell’s anti-communism novel “Animal Farm,” council members Judy Moss, Phil Salerno and John Mayer voted for the resolution. Councilmen Mike Carrigan and Ron Schmitt were absent.

1. Hmm, I might just convince Mrs. ZBDent to move to Sparks
But I think we still prefer ending up in the warmer part of Nevada . . .

3. Good to know people are against this......
This is just a town, but wasn't the state of Montana against it too? I just remember it was a whole state. Not completely sure if it was Montana, but I think it was.

4. Large town in red state
Sparks is a stones throw from Reno, 2nd largest city in NV, it's only distance is in name only, you have to see the "sign" to know your are leaving one going into the other. The population growth in Nv, the Reno/Sparks area is phoenominal, many from California this is a good sign. Many retired people moving to NV because of the "lack" od state income tax. NV missed going blue by only 110,00 votes. Hopefully we will elect a Dem Gov to the statehouse in 2006, my hopes are pinned on Senate Minority leader Dina Titus. Check out her campaign website.
