Son was 'epitome of a Marine,' says Nevada mother
this is a republican newspaper ...the rebellion is there, just reserved ...

CARSON CITY -- Carolyn Cathey said her son, James, loved being a Marine. But earlier this year when she saw him off to Camp Lejeune, N.C., she could see the "fear in his eyes."

"I think he knew he would not come home again," Cathey said.

James J. Cathey Jr. was killed Sunday in Iraq after sustaining injuries caused by an improvised bomb during combat operations near the city of Karmah, 50 miles west of Baghdad.

Carolyn Cathey remembered her son Tuesday as a someone who may have realized he ultimately would give his life for his country.

snip...

"My son died doing what he loved," she said. "He died to protect us. Do I like the fact our men are over there? I do not."

1. "I do not."
It is a little statement, but has a powerful message. Me too, Ms Cathey - I do not!

2. I recently met a woman who lost her son in Vietnam
She showed me his picture. He was a gorgeous 21-year-old, full of promise. He was her only son. She still gets tears in her eyes when she talks about him.

She says he died for a mistake and a lie. She sees history repeating itself in Iraq and protests the war regularly.

While I do offer sincere condolences to Ms. Cathey for her loss, I wonder what these two women would have to say to each other.

10. In 2000 HBO aired a documentary about centenarians.
A few of the people featured lost sons in WWII, you could see the pain on their faces when discussing the subject almost 60 years later. The sadness never goes away.

3. Ah the parade of mothers
all aimed at making Cindy look abnormal since all the others are being good little John Ford military mothers and accepting that our freedom is somehow dependant upon the continued occupation of a third world country.

Is it me are are they working this overtime these days.

4. "He died to protect us."
No, he didn't Mrs. Cathey. He died for oil, for Halliburton profits, for PNAC wet dreams.

She sounds conflicted though - still holding onto the lie about why we're there, though not liking our involvement. If the chimp loses the support of people like her, he's sunk.

6. Ditto
I'd like to see this meaningless platitude retired forever, because if you have to say it, it's probably not true. When someone lays down his life for someone else, it's pretty clear just looking at the scenario. No one in the United States was in any danger from the people who killed this poor woman's son.

9. Why didn't we hear from his pregnant wife or 9 yr old daughter???
Maybe they have a different opinion on just how noble it was for this man to die on foreign soil in a hostile land.

I know they quoted his mother as a dig to Cindy Sheehan, but damn, this man had a pregnant wife and a 9 yr old daughter who were depending on him coming home alive!
