Robertson: Chavez remarks misinterpreted (liar)
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 12:27 PM by sonicx
CNN) -- Conservative religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said Wednesday that his remarks about the removal of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez were taken out of context and that he never called for the killing of the Latin American leader.

"I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out.' And 'take him out' can be a number of things, including kidnapping; there are a number of ways to take out a dictator from power besides killing him. I was misinterpreted by the AP , but that happens all the time," Robertson said on "The 700 Club" program.

snip

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it," said Robertson on Monday's program. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war."

If Pat wants sympathy he better look between shit and syphilis in the dictionary. He might find it there.

10. It depends on what your definition of "assassinate him" is, I guess.
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 12:37 PM by kenny blankenship
See "...we really ought to go ahead and do it." could mean something COMPLETELY different from really go ahead and assassinate him. Er....Somehow.

If you take it out of context you could understandably get the totally mistaken idea that by "really go ahead" Pat Robertson meant "really go ahead". And you could get the idea that he really meant "assassinate him" when he said "assassinate him". But that's all wrong!

See, you've got to see his remarks in their full context, which is a roiling political shitstorm in which he can't POSSIBLY have meant what, in fact, he said.

16. i really doubt he's gonna squirm his way out of this
if it had been ONE phrase sure, but he rambled on about chavez long enough that his message was clear. and the two stories i've seen about this so far both include the other quote which is not in the least bit open to interpretation.

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it."

no WAY can that be twisted to mean anything other than a call to have the guy killed. his attempt to squirm out of this only makes him look even more a fool than he already has.

He doesn't even say "take him out" anywhere. What a complete and total fuckwad.

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it," said Robertson on Monday's program. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war."

He didn't even say "take him out". He said assassinate. He's counting on people not being able to read or hear or watch the video...Or maybe he's praying really hard that god will somehow change history for him. What a fucking moran.

Chevez's already offered to help America's poor, and Bush has interfered in Venezuelan elections, I don't see why Chavez can't repay Bush this way.

Perhaps just a dollar off each gallon of gas purchased by any vehical with a Democratic bumper sticker would send Bush and the GOP a message.

Maybe he could charge cars with Bush bumber stickers fifty cents extra per gallon.

52. Robertson denies Chavez assassination call
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=876a9fb9db3fa532

Pat Robertson said Wednesday that reports he supports the assassination of the Venezuelan president were taken out of context, CNN reports.

The conservative religious broadcaster made the controversial remarks about President Hugo Chavez Monday on his program, The 700 Club.

On the show he said, "If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it." He also said, "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability."

Robertson said Wednesday he didn't say assassination, but admitted to using the phrase take him out.

He said, "take him out doesn't have to be killing him."

While Chavez dismissed Robertson's words, Venezuelan Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel strongly condemned them and called on President Bush to take some sort of legal action.

I love this comment by Robertson
Robertson said Wednesday he didn't say assassination, but admitted to using the phrase take him out.

doesn't it sound like the same defense Rove gave for Plame... I didn't say Plame I said Wilson's wife!!!

53. OK: I'll play along (wants to humor the old man).
Let's say that Robberson meant "Take him out". Not necessarily kill him, but just kidnap him, or otherwise spirit him out of Venezuela where he won't do any more harm.

What right do we have to kidnap people? It's my understanding that kidnapping people is punishable by EXECUTION. Did you hear me, Pat? I said execution. I believe something happened to Charles Lindberg's son: he was kidnapped and killed. When they found the perpetrators, I believe they were executed.

What makes YOU different, Pat?

This whole thing gets stranger and stranger. We really are on the edge of a moral precipice when its OK to publicly broadcast stuff like this.

I'd say go after the stations that aired it and challenge their license renewals with the FCC.

If PR became too much of a loose canon/ liability, he'd lose access to his TV audience.

What makes this moron a Christian. Wasn't he the one who wanted to use a nuke on the State Department ?

56. Just as an aside
I watched the 700 Club once (yes, I did, but it was only for a few minutes). Robertson was explaining about a new device, a hand held GPS receiver.

He claimed that if you could find out where you were with one of these gadgets, "the government" could pinpoint your location as well!

This was during the Clinton Administration, so needless to say, "the government" was evil then.

"Yes, folks, if you are dumb enough to believe me then your dumb enough to send me money!"

61. Is there any GOOD way you can read this later remark from Pat?
An article released this afternoon:
Robertson Apologizes for Calling for Chavez' Assassination
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Pat Robertson is apologizing for calling for the U.S. assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network has released a statement in which he says, "Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement."

On today's broadcast of "The 700 Club," Robertson initially denied calling for Chavez's assassination on Monday's program. But the tape and transcript show that Robertson said of Chavez, "If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it."

On today's broadcast, Robertson suggested that killing a dictator may sometimes be morally justified, citing the example of a German theologian who was executed for plotting against Hitler.
