20. He was APPOINTED without confirmation - where does he get the
authority to make these sweeping, cripping changes to the UN document in the name of the ENTIRE US? Most of them would NOT get majority support.

Even APPEARANCES of democracy or human decency in this country have been abandoned already - but this is another blow.

11. I'm so angry!!!
This makes my blood boil! How DARE he do this! He isn't even legitimate. He was sneakily INSTALLED by Bush while Congress was on recess. I hope that the U.N. stands strong and doesn't let him bully his way into purposely diluting these words in order to achieve this administration's goals to undermine and weaken human rights, halt or slow down environmental protection, continue the policy of torture and illegal wars, etc., etc., etc. It's just unbelievable that this is happening. When is America going to wake up? Where the hell are the Democrats and why aren't they lambasting him right now?? Why isn't this being broadcast on TV? I hope that at the very least, Countdown and the Daily Show cover this. Those two shows are about the only ones I trust these days to cover the truth (and one of them is a COMEDY show, for God's sake!!)

OK, deep breaths.... Serenity now, serenity now.....

15. In the Los Angeles Times...
If, you can get your hands on today's Los Angeles Times, ( Thursday, August 25)...grab it. This article (about Bolton) was in it and also a FANTASTIC front page article, "A CIA Cover Blown, a White House Exposed". It is a huge article including a timeline from 2002-2005 with all the details about the outing of Valerie Plame.

You're going to need a good chronology when Fitzgerald presents his case agains the Bush traitors.

24. Here are some of the things Bolton rejects - from the New York Times
Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 05:30 PM by Nothing Without Hope
I was looking through the NY Times article on this - Bolton rejected language supporting the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, disarmament as opposed to nuclear nonproliferation, many other things. Sickening. Of course, he WANTS to destroy the effectiveness of the UN, we've known that all along and so have the neocons - that's one of the reasons (all of them sinister) why they want him.

Here's the NYT article:

Bolton Pushes U.N. on Change as U.S. Objects to Draft Plan

By WARREN HOGE
Published: August 25, 2005

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 24 -

(snip)

The new American approach recommends scrapping more than 400 passages in the 38-page draft prepared under the General Assembly president, Jean Ping of Gabon, that was being readied for a summit conference next month after nearly a year of intensive negotiations.

(snip)

Among the changes under consideration are the substitution of the Human Rights Commission with a more powerful Human Rights Council that would no longer allow rights violators onto the panel; the creation of a Peacebuilding Commission to help countries emerging from conflict; the defining of terrorism to exclude its justification as a national resistance or liberation tool; and the empowerment of the international community to intervene in countries that fail to protect their people from genocide and ethnic cleansing.

(snip)

Among them are the International Criminal Court, which the United States says could hear frivolous actions against Americans abroad; the Kyoto Protocol on global warming; the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty; and a pledge to devote 0.7 percent of gross national product to development.

The United States also objects to the document's stress on disarmament rather than nonproliferation and says it lacks clarity in assigning responsibility to a management oversight committee and fails to make clear the needs for developing nations to provide better governance so that aid can be properly directed to the needy.

(snip)

Here is a vicious, unconfirmed, bugnuts hack unilaterally ripping up the UN and opposing any action on global warming or disarmament or any of the other important international issues. Why is he being given this huge international power? We must FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT - THIS IS VITALLY IMPORTANT!!!

that this is just the beginning of PNAC's destruction of the the UN.

They don't like the UN, so they get their poster boy as the US spokesman, who then makes over 400 changes to a doc that was almost finished and I'm sure the pricks will come out and say accept our changes or no more $$ for you from the US.

A big part of me would love to see the rest of the UN member states shoot these pricks the finger and tell them to go bugger off. Then move the UNHQ to Brussels or something and isolate the US before these shitheads cause anymore fuckin trouble.

PNAC fuckers are now in power at every level and there's not a fucking thing we can do about it. I hope the rest of the world stands strong and tells them to "Get fucked"

Bolton throws UN summit into chaos

Bush's envoy demands 750 changes to reorganisation plans

Julian Borger in Washington
Friday August 26, 2005
The Guardian

John Bolton, Washington's new ambassador to the United Nations, has called for wholesale changes to a draft document due to go before a UN summit next month aimed at reshaping the world body.
Mr Bolton, a long-standing UN critic who was given a temporary appointment by George Bush three weeks ago after the United States Senate failed to agree on his nomination, has proposed 750 amendments to the draft and called for immediate talks on them.

The 29-page document has been drawn up by a committee under the UN general assembly president, Jean Ping of Gambia, over the past year, during which time several drafts have been circulated.
Critics complained that the US objections had come towards the end of the drafting process, with only three weeks to go before the summit.

But Benjamin Chang, a spokesman for the American team at the UN, said Mr Bolton had simply been restating long-held US opinions. "Those are not new positions; surprise positions," he said. "We've been engaged in this process, since the first meeting."

The Bolton amendments, published in the US press, seek to play down the emphasis given to alleviating poverty, and expunge all references to the millennium development goals, including the target for wealthy countries to donate at least 0.7 % of national income to the developing world. America currently gives less than 0.2% in such aid.

the sheer arrogance of this is just mind-boggling. no really! it is difficult to put into words. i really wonder; just what they are doing this for? is it so they can again label the un as 'irrelevant' when bolton is laughed out of the building for this disgrace? there must be SOME purpose to this, but i'm not sure what it is.
