Myers troubled by lagging support for Iraq war

Myers troubled by lagging support for Iraq war

PENTAGON Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Richard Myers says he's troubled by a growing disconnect between how American troops who are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq feel about the war there and what the polls suggest Americans at home think.

Myers just returned from the region and he says morale couldnt be higher. He says the vast majority of the soliders he spoke with know why they're there, and after serving for a time, feel more commited to the job than ever.

Myers says soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are concerned about attitudes back at home and they want reassurance that they will be allowed to finish what their country began four years ago.

48. A close friend of mine is a marine...
who has just been shipped out again. He says the Iraqi people want the Marines dead, despite being friendly face-to-face. He thinks that we should pull out of there and that the soldiers should come home. Not one for anecdotal evidence, but he is the reason I am protesting the war in Vegas on Sept. 24th. Myers obviously does not speak for everyone.

55. You know, if this was a legitimate war, if there is such a thing, I may
may feel differently. But we were lied to, deceived every inch of the way, and it looks like it was to enrich the already rich. To steal oil and fill the pockets of the oil industry before the wells run dry. They know its coming and they want to line their nests.

I am more inclined to support an effort to capture Bin Laden. But the boy king totally fucked that up. And I suspect that he let the bastard go at the behest of the Saudi royals.

Saddam was a convenient scape goat.

16. He would know....
Can't ya just see Myers asking his field commanders about morale? "It's great, sir". Like any of his reports would tell him otherwise. I remember reading the "Stars and Stripes" when I was in Nam and seeing it reported how well things were going and how high morale was. I don't think I ever ran into a single troop in-country who shared that rosy assessment. Every statement out of Westmoreland was a joke. Same with Myers.

54. Yes they do. Both were launched on false premises.
We are in Afghanistan ONLY for the oil pipeline. The 9-11 stuff linking to Afghanistan was pure mythology. The war in Afghanistan was planned far earlier and the Taliban were threatened in July, 2001 with carpet bombing "when the snow falls (October)" if they did not agree to the oil pipeline deal.

22. Lagging support? The great majority of Americans have NEVER supported
this war. 58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. I'll never forget that stat. Feb. '03. Before all the lies were exposed; before the full horror and costs of it were known. 58%! Across the board in all polls.

About half of that 58% opposed the war outright. The other half would only support a U.N. peacekeeping mission (world consensus), not preemptive, unilateral war by Bush.

So, Americans didn't trust Bush even THEN.

The only dip in that number came in the few weeks of the invasion, obviously influenced by concern for US troops in heavy combat--then it went right back up to nearly 60%, where it remained throughout the election, and has now grown to over 80% today, cutting deep in Bush's base.

"Lagging support" is not the way to describe this. There NEVER WAS much support. 40% was ALL the support it every had!

Support consisted of drum beating and flag waving by the politicians and media. That was it.

Even Army leadership wasn't supportive. Bush went into the retired ranks to find support.

"PENTAGON Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Richard Myers says he's troubled by a growing disconnect between how American troops who are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq feel about the war there and what the polls suggest Americans at home think."

First of all - I would LOOOOVE to see a real survey of how the troops, especially those in Iraq, feel about this war.

Next, "what the polls suggest Americans at home think". Um, could you water that down some more please? Suggest? What we 'think'? Please. I am NOT a big defender of polls in general, but it is quite clear that 'Americans at home' are fed up with the way the war is going and with the fact that our 'leaders' give us no reason to think there is a plan to 'win' this war or to get out anytime soon. 'Stay the course' is not a war strategy and WE ARE NOT STUPID.

Okay, rant over.

Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 03:46 PM by Solly Mack
Their biggest worry is being sent back and dying. Then they worry about how benefits have been slashed. As for the war itself? They worry the government will turn on them because it's going bad. The government is in the habit of ignoring the needs of soldiers once a war has proved to be bad policy. Politicians tend to distance themselves from the very wars they voted on when the poll numbers take a dip...but instead of blaming their own support for the war and their own votes for war, politicians blame "anti-war" sentiment...when it's ALWAYS the fault of bad policy and supporting bad policy.

I want to see them saying that with my own eyes.

The soldiers I speak to in Afghanistan are not concerned about attitudes back home. They are concerned if they are going to make it out without getting killed. The next concern on their list is if they are going to be shipped off to Iraq when they finish their time in Afghanistan. They are worried about the poverty they are seeing and after that I hear alot about biting flies that like to crawl into any orifice they can. Oh, and the heat is a common topic. Not one mention ever of being concerned about attitudes back home.

You see, they are busy fighting his damn war and trying to stay alive. They don't have time to play politics for his sorry ass.
