Gathering holds "funeral" for Medicaid as cuts loom (Missouri)

A giant grim reaper with the face of Gov. Matt Blunt plus more than a hundred people dressed in black conducted a "funeral" Sunday in front of the Old Courthouse to mark what they described as the death of Medicaid, a health care program for the poor. Participants warned of darker times ahead.

"Soon, all of Missouri will feel the effects," said Bob Oberst, a volunteer for Paraquad, an advocacy group for the disabled that organized the rally downtown. With no preventive health care, emergency rooms will become more crowded with the sickest of the uninsured, he said, and the cost, in effect, will be shifted to those who pay for private insurance.

For example, Oberst said, when wheelchair cushions at a cost of a couple of hundred dollars are no longer paid by Medicaid, those people will end up in emergency rooms with sores that will cost thousands of dollars to treat.

Medicaid cuts could carry a political cost, too

GERSTER, Mo. - Gary Ruckel, like most rural Missourians, backed Matt Blunt for governor last fall and voted other Republicans into legislative seats.

Ruckel agreed with Blunt on issues such as gun control and gay marriage, but he was not considering a subject that hit much closer to home: medical care.

So when Blunt proposed cuts in Medicaid last month that could cost Ruckel and his wife, Vivian Ruckel, some services, the couple had second thoughts about backing Republicans.

"It kind of jumps back and kicks you in the teeth, is what it does, because I wasn't planning on this," said Ruckel, who lives about 50 miles north of Springfield. "If they cut back on Medicaid, it's going to crucify us, because we don't make that much."

10. Missouri is national "test case"

A KC Star article last month included quotes that Missouri is doing this as a national test case, to see how citizens handle these cuts. It mentioned that Tennessee is the only other state doing similar Medicaid gutting.

These drastic cuts were attributed to the Republican new 'ownership society" philosophy.

Missouri citizens did not support these drastic Medicaid cuts.
