Anti-war band win MTV awards
From James Bonein New York
GREEN DAY, the anti-war punk rockers, swept the MTV Video Music Awards in a sign that American popular culture is turning against US presence in Iraq.

The Californian band won seven awards for their anti-war album American Idiot and the single The Boulevard of Broken Dreams, including Best Rock Video, Best Group Video, Video of the Year and the Viewer’s Choice Award.

Accepting the awards at the ceremony in Miami on Sunday night, the band members noted that they had been playing together for 16 years before the success of their latest album. “I think it struck a note right now,” bassist Mike Dirnt said. “Here’s to our soldiers. Let’s bring them home safe.”

The group has attracted much comment because their video, Wake Me Up When September Ends, about a soldier separated from his loved one by the war, is the most requested song on the music channel.

2. No they just tend to sing like the Sex Pistols
But they're American.

I wonder if the album is popular because of the anti-war sentiments, or because it just happens to be one of their better ones.

4. Geek Alert: Actually they started as an almost total rip-off of...
...Stiff Little Fingers. Much like the Black Crowes were another version of the Faces.

They just happened to grow nicely over the years...actually getting a bit of their own voice.

Still a little too produced for my tastes...but the energy/passion is mostly there for folks to dig on.

Green Day is good, but a bit overproduced at this point.

Not bad for a bunch of gay punks, eh?

I heard them (Green Day) discuss coming out in an interview.
No doubt it was them. Not hearsay--they were talking about it. It was about 3 years ago.

All are married (or were, the bass player is divorced) with children.

5. Not to be cynical, but I don't think it is one of their better albums
musically, but it is great for the anti-war sentiments. I think it won the mtv award because they made a very well marketed album that easily gained popularity. The songs are catchy, and they're easy to sing along to. Billy Joe does have a good voice, and i just hope that the liberal ideas are as catchy as the chorus to blvd. of broken dreams.

15. This is the most important political news today...
I've heard much about even more citizens protesting this war than the percentages protesting the Viet Nam War. I've read that the reason there is no impact is that we protesters don't by CDs and DVDs, we don't shop and WalMart and we simply do not support corporate America. Therefore, not much attention is paid to us and this diminishes our power.

NOW, we have a group that buys CDs and DVDs and does shop corporate American and they are turning fast on this administration and the other Neocons.

This is so important and I am so proud.

Billie Joe reckons this is what Congress would sound like if they stood up and told the truth:

http://www.lyred.com/lyrics/Green+Day/American+Idiot/Holiday/

The representative from California has the floor:

Sieg heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel Towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me

"Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia."

"Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue."

"Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's calling out to idiot America."

44. IMHO...
...American Idiot is one of the best albums (not really an album, but you know what I mean) ever - and I mean ever.

Many people like the style of music, but have become too anti-success. You can say they are a ripoff band, sound like someone else, blah blah blah, but Green Day does not have a patent on that. There are tons of highly successful bands that could be construed as rip-off artists (if that's what you're looking to find).

The reason some Green Day's music sounds similar to others is because they play very simple songs (3-4 chords) with awesome hooks and melodies. You won't hear anyone say that Dave Matthews sound like anyone because his music is extremely complicated in comparison to most. But the simpler songs are the better selling songs and American Idiot is no exception. Of course some will sound familiar - there's only so much you can do with a few chords. But they've made them their own and made them very, very appealing to many (including me - a 48 year old geezer).

And who is the asshat that had to bring the gay thing up? It's not true, but so what? What if they are?

48. Green Day has commented on populist
topics before. Check out these lyrics of one of my favorite Billie Joe songs:

i want to be the minority
i dont need your authority
down with the moral majority
'cause i want to be the minority

i pledge allegiance to the underworld
one nation under dog
there of which i stand alone
a face in the crowd
unsung, against the mold
without a doubt,
singled out
the only way i know

*chorus*

stepped out of the line
like a sheep runs from the herd
marching out of time
to my own beat now
the only way i know
one light, one mind
flashing in the dark
blinded by silence of a thousand broken hearts
"for cryin out loud" she screamed unto me
a free for all
fuck 'em all
"you are your own sight"

Green Day deserves all the attention they are getting. They are showing that there is more to music than rap and hip hop.
