ABC - Poll: Bush Approval at a Career Low
ABC News/Washington Post Poll Finds Iraq Ratings Negative, but Stable

Aug. 30, 2005 — George W. Bush's job approval rating slipped to a career low 45 percent in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, damaged both by discontent with the war in Iraq and broad unhappiness with the price of gasoline at home.

Views on Iraq, while stable, are not good: Fifty-three percent of Americans say the war was not worth fighting, 57 percent disapprove of the way Bush is handling it and 68 percent call the level of U.S. casualties unacceptable. The public only divides, 49-49 percent, on whether the war has improved long-term U.S. security, its basic rationale.

At home, opinions on gasoline prices are even more dire. Just 22 percent approve of Bush's work on the problem, while a whopping 73 percent disapprove. Two-thirds say gas prices are causing them financial hardship — back up after a dip last week — and six in 10 think the Bush administration could take measures to cut the price of gas.

That view seems to run contrary to Bush's comment Monday: "I wish I could snap my fingers and lower the price of gasoline for you. The markets don't work that way. I'd be snappin' if I could do it."

16. That's not what he said during the "debates"
I wonder when the chimp-supporters will remember that he promised during the election to keep oil prices low?

"Waaaaaallll, I'll jess call up my good friends the Saudis and lean on em a little..."

Yeah, George. Sure you will.

hey, that didn't work out, either.
or did the Bushies mean gas would be cheap in Iraq? Maybe we misunderstood.

8. "But I shortened my vacation. Sheesh!"
Until the waves rise up and wash him and his cohorts away, he'll just keep making the wrong moves.

Not meeting with Cindy Sheehan--bad move.

Forcing a so-called constitution down Iraqi throats just to hold meaningless referendum on time--bad move.

Letting the world go by without much involvement but lots of helicopter rotors whirring often--bad move.

And now reviving the Social Security "reform" push--bad move.

Does he really think anyone is going to care what he wants beyond those safe choir people he makes sure he preaches to every time he ventures beyond his bubble world?

PLEASE ADD THE FOLLOWING TO ANY conversation you have with ANYBODY about this. I don't even care, by now, if they did or didn't vote for him. If they didn't, so much the better because you will strengthen THEIR resolve to join the fight to oust bush. If they did, this MAY give them pause... and perhaps even a redemption from the Dark Side. CHECK THIS OUT. It's ESSENTIAL - a HUGE weapon in our expanding arsenal:

Bush has slashed Clinton's Disaster Mitigation Program. (unbelievable)

I hope they rot in hell.

it's "stable" so they say. Rating sucks but ABC has to point out whatever good they can to prop up the chimp.

I guess "stable" sounds good as opposed to "in free fall" which is what is probably happening now that gas prices are going to go much, much higher.

Enjoy, morans!!!

22. Yeah, and I remember the Windfall Profits Tax that Jimmy Carter
imposed on the oil industry during an oil crisis during his administration - to prevent the oil companies from profiting unfairly off an essential need of the citizenry. Really slammed 'em for price-gouging.

So FUCK IT. It CAN be done. Something can be done, george, and as "president," you are PERFECTLY positioned to issue an executive order about it. You just don't want to see your cronies and donors to share the pain from which the rest of us have to suffer.

He is PERFECTLY positioned as an oil man with a longtime family connection to the oil bidness to show some real leadership here, and compel the oil industry to help share the burden. Certainly they've received enough lopsided advantages from him by now to offset any shortfalls they'd experience, now, wouldn't they?

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 05:34 PM by lakercub
That was then:

"What I think the president ought to do is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots. One reason why the price is so high is because the price of crude oil has been driven up. OPEC has gotten its supply act together, and it's driving the price, like it did in the past. And the president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price."

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0001/26/se.02.html

This is now:

"I wish I could snap my fingers and lower the price of gasoline for you. The markets don't work that way. I'd be snappin' if I could do it."

Hypocritical and disgusting. This man sinks to new lows every time he opens his mouth. We know why gas prices are what they are George. Gouging by you and your buddies...nothing else. If the world was completely at peace and there were no hurricanes at all, your boys would invent other reasons to raise oil prices.

How can this transparent robbery be going over so many heads?

I am physically ill over what has been done to this country. Tens of millions of people are suffering and will suffer even more as Repuke aholes serve the interests of the wealthy ruling class of this country. People are being left to die for lack of basic resources while they consider making tax breaks permanent. Is anyone convinced that we are prepared for any type of threat, either natural or man made? Or are we just prepared to protect the interests and property of the wealthy? Does the Red Cross have enough Cajun speakers to even answer the desperate calls for help from all the poor people who are drowning down South? Trent Lott lost one of his houses? Who cares? The poor and less well off are always the ones without insurance, without the means to even evacuate the path of a storm. They have been drowning since 2000. Sorry, but Repukes just make me sick!

New poll finds Bush Iraq ratings down
Reuters

Aug 30, 2005 — WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush's approval rating slipped to a career low of 45 percent on concerns over the Iraq war and spiraling U.S. fuel prices, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll published on Tuesday.

The poll of more than 1,000 people found that 57 percent disapprove of Bush's handling of the war and 68 percent regard the level of American casualties as unacceptable.

But a majority of respondents, 54 percent, said the United States should keep its forces in Iraq until civil order is restored. Fifty-nine percent said they do not think a deadline should be set for the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Bush has rejected anti-war protesters' calls for a troop withdrawal and appealed to Americans not to waver because of the rising death toll, now nearly 1,900.

"Improving long-term U.S. security" is now the basic rationale for invading Iraq, according to the story. What will it be next week? To keep the Mongolian hordes at bay?
