Coleman says Robertson comments help fuel paranoia

WASHINGTON - Sen. Norm Coleman, returning from a trip to South America, said religious broadcaster Pat Robertson's suggestion that American agents assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez helped fuel suspicions about U.S. intentions in the region.

"When I was with Chavez a number of months ago, he was telling me that he was convinced that we were trying to assassinate him, that we were going invade him," Coleman said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I told him that simply wasn't a reality, that's not the policy of this government.

"These comments feed into Chavez' paranoia."

Coleman, a Minnesota Republican who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Western Hemisphere subcommittee, was in the midst of four-country visit to South America last week when Robertson said of Chavez, "if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it." Robertson later apologized.

3. Normy
Coleman called Robertson's comments "terribly unhelpful from an American foreign policy perspective. They were foolish."

Well I guess Normy is the designated spokesperson by Rove on this matter. Deny it but do not put that much effort into it.

6. They need as many cheerleaders & distractors as possible
Funny, now that Preacher Pat made his faux pas, the US must do its utmost to insure Chavez' health.

Do you think that Coleman's presentation did anything to ease the tension or lower anti-US fears and tensions?

8. Amen
You can also take a look at "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man."

I'd say Chavez is lucky to be alive today. Sadly I fear our 'hit men' will curtail that situation.

5. I'm calling George Galloway to put the muzzle back on this
creep.

In my wildest imagination I'll never understand why Minnesota voted this cretin in office.

7. That's rich coming from Coleman.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's the height of irony for these words to come out of the mouth of a person who is only in office because his political rival was killed in an airplane crash under questionable circumstances.

"When I was with Chavez a number of months ago, he was telling me that he was convinced that we were trying to assassinate him, that we were going invade him," Coleman said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I told him that simply wasn't a reality, that's not the policy of this government."

9. A Rookie Senator apointed to head the Committee on Investigations
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 07:04 PM by tom_paine
(the only place where an investigation into the suspicious and well-timed --for Coleman, that is-- 'accident' that befell his opponent, could start)

is what fuels suspicion (which murderers call paranoia when they are on trial)

Let the record show that only the suspicious 'accident' that befell his opponent is the ONLy reason Mr. Coleman has a seat in the Imperial Senate.

13. Hello!
Very interesting point. I thought it very odd myself that Coleman was already heading this committee.

10. Watch a "significant left" move from Coleman. What that means
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 07:17 PM by Prodemsouth
is he will be "more gay friendly" and "more pro choice"..Economics? forget about it-let the poor stay poor. He knows things are not looking good for his party so he will throw some bones to social Liberals and they will vote for him as they support all Republicans who toss them a bone or two on gay rights or abortion. The media will start saying he is a "Moderate" or "Maverick" Republican. The corporatist will back him because they need him for things like media ownership rules and tax cuts. The idiot far left will just stay home or vote Green because Franken was not for this enough or against that enough- or uhhmm..the truth..which is..uhh..he is well.. you know Jewish. And we will be stuck with Coleman for another 6 years. Thats the way Minnesota looks to me the last two or three election cycles.
