‘Iraqi Shia minister should go after mass killing’

BAGHDAD - A Sunni leader called on Tuesday for Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Baker Solagh’s dismissal, accusing the Shia-dominated government’s security forces of responsibility in the murder of 37 Sunnis found last week dumped in a river.

His demand was the latest volley in ongoing tensions between the once-dominant Sunnis and the Shias that many fear could degenerate into civil war.

Addressing a press conference with US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, Adnan Al Dulaimi, former head of Sunni Waqf, charged that security forces were targetting Sunnis and killing them randomly.

“I demanded the dismissal of the interior minister because the ministry has become very politicised,” said Dulaimi, who now heads a Sunni pressure group.
