Anti-Castro Cuban militant refuses to answer questions at deportation hearing

EL PASO, Texas – An anti-Castro militant initially refused to answer questions from U.S. immigration attorneys Tuesday at his deportation hearing, but later acknowledged using several aliases and passports with different names.
Luis Posada Carriles, 77, is wanted in several countries for the deadly 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner. He requested asylum in the United States after his May arrest in Miami on charges that he sneaked into the country illegally through Mexico.

His deportation hearing also will consider whether the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion was an act of U.S. terrorism.

When first asked about a series of aliases, including "Bambi," Posada invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. After consulting with attorneys, Posada acknowledged using aliases and passports with various names as he traveled among Latin American countries and the United States.

Posada Carriles has the distinction
of having acted in the very FIRST
bombing of an airliner in flight.
He's no "militant," thank you,

Posada acknowledges aliases after initial refusal to respond

An anti-Castro militant refused to answer the first wave of questions from U.S. immigration attorneys in his deportation hearing Tuesday but later acknowledged using several aliases and passports with different names.

On Tuesday, Posada initially invoked the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when asked about a series of six aliases the government said he had used over the years. But after consulting with attorneys during a break, Posada acknowledged using the aliases and passports with various names as he traveled among Latin American countries and the U.S.

Posada also later acknowledged that it was possible he used an El Salvadoran passport with the name Franco Rodriguez Mena and Posada's picture to enter the U.S. at Miami in April 2000.

"Listen well to that," Posada said about a reference to who paid for the 1997 bombings. "I didn't say they were financing me. I said they were financing those operations, that's it."

Chaffardet said that because of his age, Posada could be sentenced to no more than four years in prison under Venezuelan law. But, he cautioned that the government probably would strip Posada of his citizenship, opening the door for his deportation to Cuba.

Venezuelan officials have vowed not to send Posada to Cuba and that country has said it would not seek his extradition.

FBI helps Posada to enter Honduras in 2004: attorney
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2005-08-31 13:29

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) helped anti-Castro Cuban militant Luis Posada Carriles enter Honduras a year ago, a lawyer for Ramon Romero, Honduran ex-general director of migration, said Tuesday .

Romero is accused of selling Honduran passports to hundreds of Cubans, Lebanese and Colombians who are presumedly linked to drug-trafficking and terrorism.

Juan Carlos Sanchez, Romero's lawyer, told the Tegucigalpa court in a document that Romero's office allowed Posada to pass through the Honduran territory because he came with a false passport and was protected by members of the FBI.

Posada and three of his compatriots were jailed in 2002 in Panama after a failed assassination plot against Cuban President Fidel Castro in 2000, although they were only charged with possession of explosives.

Sanchez said Posada entered Honduras in August 2004 after being pardoned by ex-president of Panama Mireya Moscoso.
