Special Operations sergeant dies from Iraq wounds

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- A sergeant assigned to the Army's Special Operations Command has died from injuries he received from a roadside bomb last week in Iraq, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Sgt. 1st Class Obediah J. Kolath, 32, of Louisburg, Mo., died Sunday at a military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, from wounds he received Thursday in Husaybah, Iraq, the military said.

The explosion killed three other Special Operations soldiers, whose deaths were announced Saturday. Master Sgt. Ivica Jerak, 42, and Sgt. 1st Class Trevor John Diesing, 30, of Fort Bragg and Cpl. Timothy M. Shea, 22, a Ranger from Fort Benning, Ga., also were killed.

Kolath entered the Army in 1992, was a Ranger and had served in two Special Forces battalions before being assigned as a team member at the Special Operations Command.

Man, I hate to hear about these deaths. But we must never forget that the casualty list is not just a statistic, it is a list of human beings who each had intricate private lives and who will all be painfully missed.
