NEW ORLEANS -- Rescuers along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast pushed aside the dead to reach the living Tuesday in a race against time and rising waters, while New Orleans sank deeper into crisis and Louisiana's governor ordered storm refugees out of this drowning city.

---snip---

With water rising perilously inside the Superdome, Blanco said the tens of thousands of refugees now huddled there and other shelters in New Orleans would have to be evacuated.

7. Naaa, The high gas prices are Clinton's fault.
Reality Check? Not even when it hits them up side the head like a 2X4.

8. They've got to get those people out soon, or they're going to have cholera
Poor sanitation, rising waters, filth everywhere and 10,000 people are not a good combination. They can get them to a military base or bases in neighboring areas unaffected by the storm and then figure out what to do with them from there-get hotel rooms lined up, or whatever. They've got to get as many people out of New Orleans as soon as they can, or they are going to have even worse problems on their hands.

10. yeah, the water is a toxic stew at this point
imagine all the chemicals in a city, the USTs for the gas stations, the dry cleaners, the mercury and lead in appliances, all the petroleum in the cars, decaying animals...that water is not only not potable, it's downright toxic to touch. and let's not forget the sewers.

next up? yellow fever, dysentary, malaria, cholera...we need to focus all resources on getting every living soul out of New Orleans as soon as possible before this turns from a property destruction tragedy into an epidemic.
