Using a Mobile Phone Regularly Does Not Cause Cancer, Scientists Conclude

Using a mobile phone regularly does not cause cancer, scientists conclude

By Steve Connor, Science Editor

Published: 31 August 2005

Using mobile phones regularly for up to 10 years does not cause brain tumours, according to one of the largest studies into the link between cancer and cellphone radiation.

The findings lend further weight to the mounting evidence showing that mobile phones do not appear to cause serious illnesses - at least in the relatively short period in which they have become commonplace.

<>

Last May, a study found that people who use mobile phones regularly in rural areas are three times more likely than city dwellers to suffer from brain tumours.

Scientists believe that rural users of mobile phones receive relatively large doses of microwave radiation from their handsets to compensate for the fact that base stations in the countryside are further apart than in the city. However, a study published last year of 427 people with brain tumours found no evidence to suggest that mobile phones were responsible, although the scientists behind this study warned that further research is still needed.

8. Are The Birds BLIND? Are They Drawn To The Towers Like A Moth To A Flame?
<< as well a reported 40 million birds perish each year crashing into microwave towers. >>

I find that statement to be very questionable. Can you substantiate it? I'd like to know more about these FORTY MILLION BIRDS that perish from crashing into microwave towers.

What happens to all the carcasses? Is this the same for TV towers and radio towers? What about forest ranger watch-towers?

11. The 40 million figure
comes from an August 2002 press release by the American Bird Conservancy and Forest Conservation Council. Wording was "May be as high as 40 million". i've seen estimates as high as 100 million and as low as 4 million. Noone knows for sure but it is an extraordinary sum. more than 40,000 towers taller than 200 feet are in the US at present and the number will likely double in the next ten years.

Cell phones alone are expected to make up 65,000 tons of landfill waste in 2005

A comprehensive report by American Bird Conservancy analyzing all available tower kill data, identified 230 bird species killed at towers, mostly neotropical migratory songbirds. This is nearly 40% of all U.S. bird species. Gulf Coast region tower kill records in the literature are numerous. With nearly 60,000 lit towers registered nationwide and an estimated 50,000 additional towers to be constructed in the next decade, the impacts on imperiled species will continue to be significant.

For more information and to view American Bird Conservancy's comprehensive tower report, visit ABC's web site at www.abcbirds.org.

A number of recent studies have demonstrated that many species of migratory birds are in a state of serious decline. The major reasons include the loss and degradation of habitat, introduced species, pesticides, predation by domestic and feral cats, oil spills and pollution. But most recently attention has focused on the issue of bird mortality from collisions with man-made structures, particularly with telecommunication towers. This increased attention stems from the fact that recent legislation will result in the doubling of the number of tall towers (those greater than 200 feet in height) from 40,000 to 80,000 in the near future.

Because the Federal Aviation Administration requires that any structure over 199 feet in height be lit, tall towers pose the greatest risk to birds. Most songbirds migrate at night using the stars as navigational aids. Certain weather conditions lower the birds' visibility causing them to fly at lower than normal altitudes and bringing them into contact with towers and their support wires. A recent, well-publicized incident documented the severity of impacts from such collisions: On just one foggy, snowy night in 1996, 10,000 Lapland longspurs were killed in western Kansas. It is conservatively estimated that 4 million birds are killed each year through collisions with towers.

http://www.defenders.org/wildlife/birds/birdtower.html

The TV and radio towers cause the death of about 20 million birds per year. Each tower kills about 300 per year. This happens most often when birds are migrating at night and bad weather and clouds force the birds to fly nearer the earth.  A TV or radio tower mounted on a high point is thus a serious hazard and the guy wires take their toll. Steadily burning lights on the towers seem to attract the birds as well.

13. Sounds like blaming the birds
for the never ending needs and arrogance of the humans.

These orgs. who are putting this info out are very conservative enviro groups.
I'd give you more details like the example of 900 birds that flew into one tower at one passing as they were on their migration route if interested. These routes are ancient and so when a new tower comes up the birds don't simply reroute themselves.

Here is a portion of what goes into manufacturing of ONE cell phone:
-3,200 feet of bulk gases

-22 cubic feet of toxic, corrosive and volatile gases

-2,275 gallons of de-ionized water (a liver, gastrointestinal and neurological toxin)

-20 pounds of assorted chemicals

-285 kilowatts of electricity

-25 pounds of highly corrosive sodium hydroxide

-2,840 gallons of wastewater

-7 pounds of misc. hazardous wastes

And More....

It's time to realize that there is a direct link between the gadgets that make their lives "convenient" and the firhtening reality of the violence, turmoil and destruction that plague our world.

<< These routes are ancient and so when a new tower comes up the birds don't simply reroute themselves. >>

So they dismiss the reality of the tower being there an try to fly right through it as though it doesn't exist? Maybe PETA needs to get involved with this... TEAR DOWN ALL THE CELL PHONE TOWERS NOW! :eyes:

23. Yes, people need to consider the damage and make less harmful choices.
Those poor, sweet, innocent birds, and I predict million will be harmed by long term cell phone exposure.

Do the math, our brains are comprised of 95% water...picture a cup of water in a microwave...that's your brain on a cell phone, every day, for hours.

I am very sensitive to energy and cannot hold a cell phone next to my head, even on a headset, for more than 15 seconds before my head starts to ache.

Yet another evil invention, corps making millions, while people and animals are paying the price. big pharma must be rubbing their greedy hands together thinking of all of the surgeries and chemo they will be trying to pan off.

Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 09:31 PM by barb162
There's an organization of bird lovers in my city that picks up the birds early in the morning who are still alive at the bottom of the high buildings and they try to rehab them. I have personally seen the many, many birds dead at the sidewalks each morning . It's sickening. What happens is unless you are at work in the early morning, the building maintenance people clean them up and most people never see them. No see 'em, no know about it. It is a huge problem.

I have seen birds fly into my window near where I have a bird bath. They see the reflection of the tree next to the window and fly into the window instead. I keep the blinds drawn on those days when it is reflecting in that way where the reflection is like a mirror and they think that window is a tree. My newspaper even had an article on ways to make sure the birds realize these reflections are windows versus trees.

My wife would die if I took hers, though.

Having a source of radiation next to your head for hours can't be too good.

Also, how the effects long term won't be know for a long time....cell phones are a relatively new technology. Nobody's had one all their lives. How do you conclude whether they do or don't with only a 20 year or so time period of study?

LIE-ABILITY is very very BAD!

Cell phones cause cellular anomalies=inclduing genetic damage, the math looks lousy. Use a land line and limit cell phone use, and keep them away from small children, those studies have been conclusive, just Google it up.

Anyone who doubts their damage to both the individual and the environment is probably in denial because they don't want to give up the toy.
