Survey: Officials unprepared for Hurricane

Survey: Officials unprepared for Hurricane

One in four American adults say the city of New Orleans should not be rebuilt, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA nationwide poll of 1,200 adults conducted 8/31.

As the magnitude of the Gulf Coast destruction became known, and as the private and public response to Hurricane Katrina came into focus, six of 10 of American adults say local officials are unprepared to respond to the challenge that is before them.

Half say the Federal Government is not doing enough to help survivors. One in 3 Americans say they know someone who has been directly affected by the hurricane.

Pollster Caveat: Like the situation on the ground, which is volatile, public opinion is fluid, consensus just beginning to form. SurveyUSA attempts here to capture a moment-in-time with this survey, conducted Wednesday 8/31, before President Bush addressed the nation, while the Superdome was being evacuated, while flood waters in New Orleans were still rising, and before the number of dead was known. Public opinion can and should be expected to change over the coming hours, days and weeks, as new information, both good and bad, becomes available. Some portions of the Southeast were without electricity and telephone service during the field period for this survey; areas without phone service would be under-represented in this telephone survey.

1. as a port, New Orleans generates far more commerce than
what it would cost to rebuild

2. I suspect most of those in favor of not rebuilding it would
be in favor of rebuilding it elsewhere.

I have yet to form an opinion.

3. "Unprepared?!?" -- No sh**, Sherlock!
With FEMA devolving into a papershuffling shell as part of the mystical "Homeland Security" cabal, and the National Guard off getting their asses blown off in Iraq, we're "unprepared" for a major disaster?

Gee, who EVER woulda guessed?

irritably,
Bright

10. Yeah, and imagine how "well prepared" they would be for a major terrorist
attack....atleast the Hurricane had some warning and people could prepare to leave and evacuate....

If there is anything that I realize after watching this awful tragedy in New Orleans and the Southern states hit by Katrina, I realize we are really all on our own and shouldn't expect any help if god forbid a terror attack hits one of our major cities....

4. I have a friend with Wildlife and Fisheries
she's been doing search and rescue for two days
through New Orleans - by boat
she may never recover from it
and she is a very strong woman

according to her, no one is in charge
everything is 'fly by the seat of your pants'
and it is total anarchy
and the place is one huge graveyard
dead are everywhere

she tells me that, by tomorrow night
she would be surprised if there is anyone left alive in the city

I could say much more
but down here we are all so overwhelmed

6. My fear was they were going to blame it all on
the local officials and it sounds, from the tone of the article they are.

7. "one in four"
amazing how they word their articles. one in four = 25%. 25 fucking percent. hell, even bush couldn't call that a "mandate."

the way i look at it, unless you live in new orleans, you have absolutely no fucking say in whether it should be rebuilt or not.

8. W's FEMA director said all would be a piece of cake
Prior to the storm, he said with W's direction and foresight that FEMA would be able to go in just as soon as the rain and wind stopped, and offer assistance right away. He's not so cocky right now. In fact, he's truly shaken.
