FOX Poll: Bush (approval rating at 45%), Iraq, Gas Prices and Roberts

9/01/05 FOX Poll Roundup: Bush, Iraq, Gas Prices and Roberts
---------------------
Thursday, September 01, 2005
By Dana Blanton
---------------------
NEW YORK — Even as a majority of Americans say they want U.S. troops to stay in Iraq (search) and finish the job, approval of President George W. Bush's handling of Iraq is at the lowest level of his presidency, according to a new FOX News poll. Views of the president's handling of the economy and terrorism are also at low points. The president's ratings correspond with the public's gloominess on top issues: many think things in Iraq are going worse than expected, pessimism about the economy is up and most foresee gas prices continuing to climb.

The latest FOX News poll finds that for the second time of Bush's presidency, more Americans disapprove than approve of his job performance: 45 percent approve and 50 percent disapprove. The other time disapproval topped approval was in August 2004 when 44 percent approved and 48 percent disapproved.

(snip)

"It is interesting to note that even as public approval of President Bush has declined, the Democrats have failed to open up a wider lead in next year’s elections," comments Opinion Dynamics Chairman John Gorman. "So far they have failed to generate an 'opposition' position that people can support. They need to define how they would make things better to attract the people who are having doubts about Republican policies."

As has been the case in the past, the issue area where Bush's receives his highest rating is on handling terrorism: 53 percent approve and 40 percent disapprove.

6. Bush will use the catastrophe in the south to propel his ratings upward.
That scumbag has purposely let the situation get out of control so he could push all back into that fear based mindset just like 9-11. This is so much worse than 911. Our troops will begin, if they haven't already, killing American citizens. Hello Hitler.

17. He can try all he wants to use the hurricane but....
considering he only cut his vacation by 2 days, and emergency response basically sucked (no guard or military put on stand-by) not taking care of gas prices before something like this happened ect... I don't think it'll hold. Way too many people are pissed at this point and the number is growing.

Maybe I'm a little optimistic, but I don't think his numbers are going to improve.

13. Try polling cell phone numbers...
These polls do not reflect young people like myself who only use cell phones. I think there was one such poll was done (by Zogby?) for the 2004 campaign and it showed a 8-10% difference against Bush.

14. One thing I agree with...
With Smirk's approval ratings tumbling, and with everything that is going on, I haven't seen many of our Democratic leaders seize this opportunity to regain control of the Senate, or the House. They seem to be willing to just do nothing to take advantage of the fact that people are receptive to hearing alternatives to the current administration's disastrous policies.

Yes, a few do speak out, but not enough, and not loudly enough. That's a disappointment, because they seem to be willing to let this opportunity just slip away, while they do nothing.

20. exactly
awhile ago there were some examples of how Faux sponsored polls worded questions in ways to pump up the pro bush side - why, when the pres is doing so poorly, would they STOP trying to slant the polls? Ergo - this is likely more than a bit of an overstatement per W's "support".
