Bush to tour battered Gulf Coast towns
9/2/2005, 4:35 a.m. PT
By JENNIFER LOVEN
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush hopes his tour of Gulf Coast communities battered by Hurricane Katrina will boost the spirits of increasingly desperate storm victims and their tired rescuers.

The president's visit Friday also was aimed at tamping down some of the criticism that he engineered a too-little, too-late response.

<snip>

Beginning in Mobile, Ala., the president was to fly by helicopter over some of the hardest-hit areas along the Alabama and Mississippi coasts and stop at a few points in Mississippi to hear from those on the ground.

Given the chaos of the early days after the storm, Bush's schedule remained fluid up until the last minute. Aides considered limiting his visit to New Orleans, mostly drowned in rank floodwaters and descending in many areas into lawlessness, to only an aerial tour.

7. I'll have to find the articles from last year
when he came to comfort Florida. Trying to remember - think it was in Punta Gorda? after Charley went through. Roads had to be cleared so his motorcade could get through. and if I'm remembering correctly, he wore dress shoes.

10. Yeah, so let's ground the choppers flying in food and water
So President Weaknstupid can fly over the ruins and tell us later how "emotional" a moment it was for him.

Unbelievable.

3. It won't happen ...
But I'd like to envision him addressing the dehydrated, starved, sick and PRESENTLY *DYING* Crowd IN FRONT OF THE NO'S CONVENTION CENTER.

Now that would be one hell of a visual?!?

4. I think they should lower him onto the top of the Superdome
with a bullhorn.

Maybe he could say, "I can hear you." again.

5. There's the solution!.....
If he goes into the superdome or convention center, they'll have to clear the area for the photo op!! Problem solved.

8. I'd love to see him on the ground in NO but he's only going to fly by
He's afraid of what people would do if they actually saw him.

13. That's why I'm willing to lay odds that he won't go to NO.
They'll come up with some excuse. Count on it.

Sorry, Your Chimpiness, we had to send him to Iraq. Give us a call every now and then and let us know how you're doing, OK?

15. Weekend at Bernie's moment
They'll have to prop up some of the dead and shoot over their shoulders so it will look like Bush is meeting with live people. It must be the toughest staff assignment yet for them to find Bush supporters to gush over W and thank him for all his wonderful help.(sarcasm) Oh, to see just one survivor shout an obscenity at him.

16. Laura is at Lafayette, gee,
lucky them! Better she should go to the Superdome. from what they were saying on one of the news (ahem) channels, W is going to the airport in New Orleans. What's the airport like? Is it open? Could he get further away? He says he's not pleased with the response? And whose fault is that, Mr. I'm-not-letting-a-little-thing-like-catagory-5-hurricane-spoil-my-vacation? Are they going to move all the dead off the streets so he won't have to look upon them? They ought to push him out of the car in front of the Superdome or the Convention Center and tell him that they'll pick him up in 2 hours. He's such a plain-spoken man of the people, I'm sure he'll just love it.
