Models predicted New Orleans disaster, experts say

WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Virtually everything that has happened in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina struck was predicted by experts and in computer models, so emergency management specialists wonder why authorities were so unprepared.

"The scenario of a major hurricane hitting New Orleans was well anticipated, predicted and drilled around," said Clare Rubin, an emergency management consultant who also teaches at the Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management at George Washington University.

...

In light of that, said disaster expert Bill Waugh of Georgia State University, "It's inexplicable how unprepared for the flooding they were." He said a slow decline over several years in funding for emergency management was partly to blame.

In comments on Thursday, President George W. Bush said, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."

2. I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees
Sounds just like "I don't think anyone anticipated people flying planes into buildings" to me! Only lamer, because unfortunately for Bush, everyone saw these problems coming.

"If we had had known exactly where the levees were going to break, we would have moved heaven and earth to fix the problem"

3. Oh please. Levees are FAMOUS for getting breached with ANY
major flooding. Famous for it. What do you think those pumps in the city of NO are FOR, anyway?

7. no one will fall for this line of bull
I read about the danger in 2002 during the "Big One" series and every freaking news channel was warning of it as Katrina was bearing down on NO. What was our great leader doing when this catastrophe was imminent and why didn't he anticipate it? Is he really that stupid and clueless or is now about trying to salvage his sorry political hide?

4. It was the subject of a friggin' TELEVISION SHOW, dammit!
I believe Bill Moyers did one, I'm not certain, but I saw one on the Discovery or the History channel. It specifically stated that it was only a matter of time before NO was hit by a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane, and they had only a Cat 3 levee!

GET THOSE PEOPLE OUT OF THERE!!!!!

5. Doesn't Bush at least listen to Led Zeppelin?
If he had, he would know that the levees could break and people would have no place to go.

8. I've been hearing and reading about this for years.
This is not only nothing new, it's positively old hat. There's been so much published and broadcast about this that to do a bibliography would be mountainous.
