ACLU Alleges Ga. Hiked Voter ID Card Fee

Friday September 2, 2005 10:01 PM

By JEFFREY McMURRAY

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union on Friday alleged
that Georgia circumvented a federal law by failing to get Justice
Department approval before hiking the fee for a controversial new
voter identification card.

The governor's office insisted it notified the department of the
change and will waive all fees for poor residents.

Laughlin McDonald, director of the ACLU's Voting Rights Project in
Atlanta, complained of the fee hike in a letter to John Tanner, chief
of the department's voting section. McDonald said state officials are
selling five-year cards for $20 and 10-year cards for $35, even though
the Justice Department had only approved a $10 fee for four-year cards.

"The more expensive it is, the more of a burden it gets to be,"
McDonald said in an interview.

1. This is a poll tax
plain and simple. Are a lot of unregistered voters trying to vote?? I doubt it. There is voter fraud but it is NOT illegals trying to vote; it is the Republicans trying to disenfranchise minorites and Democrats.

3. A friend of mine was told in the last election he couldn't vote without ID
instead of returning home for his driver's license, he said "the hell with it", and didn't vote! Now I understand why Republicans wanted this.

13. Why isn't a voter registration card good enough?
I mean we all get them when we register. Even if it is lost or something, why not let people vote provisionally?

17. Even better, include photos on all voter registration cards..
:eyes: maybe that makes too much sense. Voting needs to be made as difficult as possible..provide your own transportation, don't forget any required papers and forms of identification, and be prepared to wait in line for more than an hour to vote!

16. I've voted in NY since '72. I've NEVER been asked for ID.
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 11:10 PM by Sacajawea
The only thing I have to do is sign my name (which I think may be matched to a previous signature from when I registered). No one ever asks for a Social Security number or date of birth.

7. It's an state ID for those w/out DL or passport or govt' student ID.
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 06:15 PM by CottonBear
More than 150 counties in GA and only about 50 DMV offices and none in Metro Atlanta area (blue, poor, hispanic, gay and black).

Need I say more? We used to be able to use 17 kinds of ID or utility bills. Can't use id from private colleges (like black colleges).

They claim voter fraud while commiting election fraud by DIEBOLD. :grr:

EDIT: It's a picture ID, sort of like a DL, for folks who don't drive.

6. What?! You have to pay.
If I had to guess which states have such an abomination, I would only guess they are in the "lynching belt."

10. We have to pay for DL but this is a new ID for those who don't drive
or have a passport, oh like, let's say, poor minorites and the elderly.

9. Back to the Poll Tax Days
Did anyone really think Bushmerika was going anywhere besides two places:

1) The 1890s (perhaps the 1590s)

2) Third-World Status

14. When did Poll Taxes become legal again?
Last I checked, voting was a constitutional right, and therefore not subject to a fee.
